India: ACP booked for extorting Rs 40,000 from youth

Pune, May 27 (PTI) A case has been registered against an assistant commissioner of police posted in Pune for allegedly extorting Rs 40,000 from a youth in Satara district of Maharashtra, an official said.

Bhuinj Police Station in Satara has registered the case in this connection against ACP Deepak Humbre, who was attached to the Special Branch.

Humbre had been on "compulsory leave" for the last couple of months after an inquiry was pending in connection with a case against him, police said.

India: Domestic flight operations resume at Kolkata airport

Kolkata, May 28 (PTI) Domestic flight operations to and from Kolkata resumed on Thursday after a gap of two months due to the COVID-19 lockdown.

Though domestic flight operations across the country began on May 25, they could not be restarted in Kolkata as the state machinery was involved in relief and restoration work after Cyclone Amphan whiplashed many areas of the state.

The first flight from Kolkata left for Guhawati at 6.05 am with 40 passengers, whereas 122 passengers arrived from New Delhi on Thursday morning, the sources said.

India: PM pays tributes to Savarkar on birth anniversary

New Delhi, May 28 (PTI) Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday paid tributes to freedom fighter and Hindutva ideologue Veer Savarkar on his birth anniversary, saying he motivated several people to join the freedom struggle.

"On his Jayanti, I bow to the courageous Veer Savarkar. We remember him for his bravery, motivating several others to join the freedom struggle and emphasis on social reform," the prime minister wrote on Twitter.

He also shared a clip of his May, 2018 "Mann ki Baat" radio programme in which he referred to Savarkar.

India: Two migrant workers commit suicide in UP due to financial problems

Banda (UP) May 28 (PTI) Two migrant workers who returned a few days ago to the district committed suicide, police said on Thursday.

People close to the two deceased said that both were facing financial problems.

Suresh (22) committed suicide by hanging from a tree in his Lohara village under Mutondh police station area on Wednesday, SHO Mutondh Ramendra Tiwari said.

The body has been sent for post-mortem examination and investigations are on, the SHO said.

India: 3 Naxal terrorists killed in Jharkhand encounter

Ranchi, May 28 (PTI) Three Naxals were killed and two apprehended after a gunbattle with security forces in Jharkhand on Thursday, officials said.

They said the encounter, followed by an ambush on a reinforcement party of the Central Reserve Police Force, took place in the Manmaru-Tebo area of West Singhbhum district.

The security team was led by the 60th battalion of the CRPF along with state police and the first exchange of fire took place at about 5 am.

India: Sonia Gandhi asks Centre to unlock coffers to help needy

New Delhi, May 28 (PTI) Congress President Sonia Gandhi on Thursday asked the central government to unlock its coffers and help the needy affected by the coronavirus-induced lockdown.

In a video message posted as part of the Congress' 'Speak Up India' campaign, she lamented that even though the country is passing through a serious economic crisis with loss of livelihood due to the pandemic and the lockdown, the central government has not heard the cries of pain and trauma of people.

India: BJP to highlight one-year achievement of Modi govt

Jaipur, May 26 (PTI) Rajasthan BJP president Satish Poonia on Tuesday called upon party workers to highlight the Modi government's achievements in the last one year.

Poonia and party national vice president and Rajasthan in-charge Avinash Rai Khanna addressed BJP state spokespersons and media in-charge of districts through video conference.

Poonia said that in the last one year, the government at the Centre has done many such things which every countryman is proud of.

Indian economy to contract 5% in FY21: Fitch Ratings

New Delhi, May 26 (PTI) Fitch Ratings on Tuesday forecast the Indian economy to contract 5 per cent in the current fiscal on account of slump in economic activities following a "very severe" lockdown that has lasted much longer than expected.

In its Global Economic Outlook (GEO) for May, Fitch projected growth to rebound to 9.5 per cent in 2021-22 and an estimated 3.9 per cent growth in 2019-20.

The forecast of 5 per cent contraction is sharp decline from 0.8 per cent growth projected by the global rating agency in late April.
