Rupee slumps to close at record low

8 Oct 2018; PTI: The rupee slumped by 30 paise to finish at a fresh lifetime low of 74.06 against the US dollar on Monday amid strengthening of the greenback and steady capital outflows.

The rupee had opened lower by 14 paisa against Friday’s close of 73.76 in early trade as the US dollar strength against major global currencies weighed on the rupee sentiment.

At the Interbank Foreign Exchange (Forex) market, the local currency opened lower at 73.89 a dollar against its previous closing of 73.76.

India: Fuel price cut too late: Shiv Sena

Mumbai, Oct 5 (PTI) The reduction in fuel prices had come "too late", the Shiv Sena said Friday and claimed that the Centre had mopped up Rs 1 lakh crore per day when the rates of petrol and diesel were being increased daily.

It also slammed Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis for his reported remark that he was "ready to mortgage the state in Dr B R Ambedkar's service".

India: Sensex plummets over 800 pts on sinking rupee

Mumbai, Oct 4 (PTI) The BSE benchmark Sensex plummeted over 800 points in afternoon session Thursday as rupee sank to another low amid boiling crude prices, weak global cues.

The rupee plunged to a new low of 73.81 against the dollar, while the international benchmark Brent crude breached the US 86 per barrel level, nearing its four-year high.

The BSE 30-share barometer pared some losses and was trading at 616.15 points, or 1.71 per cent, lower at 35,359.48 at 1245 hrs.

The gauge had lost nearly 550 points in the previous session Wednesday.

Congress Working Committee calls for “Second Freedom Struggle”

Congress Working Committee (CWC) met at Sevagram Ashram’s Mahadev Bhavan in the Wardha district of Maharashtra to celebrating 150th anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, called for a “second freedom struggle” against BJP government.

Party asked public for “Second Freedom Struggle” to combat the ideology of “hate and violence” of BJP, and spoke of the “blatant hypocrisy” of the RSS which vilified Gandhi and his thoughts, but now proclaim to be his champion.

BJP MLA Ashish Deshmukh announces resignation; may join Congress

BJP MLA Ashish Deshmukh from Maharashtra has resigned from the state legislative assembly and from the primary membership of the party.

He is meeting Congress party president Rahul Gandhi, and may join the party.

Deshmukh accused the BJP-led state government of being ‘anti-farmer’ and indulging in divisive vote bank politics.

Reserve Bank of India likely to raise rates at Friday's review

Mumbai, Oct 1 (PTI): The Reserve Bank is likely to increase the repo rate by 25 basis points in the upcoming monetary policy review as inflation is expected to accelerate further due to higher crude prices and the weakness in rupee.

The monetary policy committee will start its three- day meeting from October 3 to decide on the fourth bi-monthly monetary policy.

After two successive hikes, the repo rate currently stands at 6.50 per cent.

Maharashtra BJP leader booked for rape

Mumbai, Sep 26; PTI: A case of rape has been registered against Maharashtra BJP leader Madhu Chavan, police said Wednesday.

Chavan is the chairman of the Maharashtra Affordable Housing and Development Authority.

The case was registered at Chiplun police station on Tuesday on the instructions of a court and a probe into the matter is on, said Devendra Pol, Senior Police Inspector of Chiplun police station.

According to the complainant, Chavan allegedly assaulted her repeatedly between 2002 and 2017 on false promises, he said.

Anti-blind-faith father organises son’s birthday party in ‘shamshan’ - served meat

Pandary Nath Shinde, a member of Blind-faith Elimination Committee surprised everyone when he invited his relatives and friends to his son’s birth-day party in a ‘shamshan' where, among other food, meat was served.

Some members of the Hindu community did not appreciate Shinde’s actions, got together, and went to ‘shamshan’ to purify the place. They sprinkled cow urine and read mantras to cleanse the ‘shamshan’, to make it fit for the next cremation.

Retaining Parrikar as CM is cruel, inhuman politics of BJP: Sena

Mumbai, Sep 25 (PTI) Attacking its ally for retaining an "ailing" Manohar Parrikar as Goa chief minister, the Shiv Sena Tuesday criticised the "cruel and inhuman politics" of the BJP and alleged the party was scared about losing the state.

There is "anarchy" prevailing in the coastal state in Parrikar's absence, the Sena claimed, adding the party was grappling with the problem of who could replace Parrikar as it does not have anyone "suitable" for the top post.

Petition moved in HC against triple talaq ordinance

Mumbai, Sep 24; PTI: A former municipal councillor, a city-based NGO and an advocate have jointly approached the Bombay High Court challenging provisions of an ordinance that makes the practice of instant triple talaq a punishable offence.

President Ram Nath Kovind had last Wednesday signed the ordinance, according to which giving instant triple talaq has been made illegal and void, and will attract a jail term of three years for the husband.
