Imphal, Dec 22 (PTI) The Manipur government has imposed a prohibitory order on Imphal West district for two months in view of the continued protests against the new citizenship law, an official said on Sunday.

The prohibitory order under Section 144 CrPC was clamped on Imphal West on Saturday from 5.30 pm, said a statement issued by the office of District Magistrate Naorem Praveen.

Imphal, Dec 8 (PTI) Supporting the movement, spearheaded by the Manipur People Against CAB (Manpac), protesters came out in large numbers in many areas of the city on Sunday while women vendors of a temporary market here staged a sit-in against the proposed legislation.

The women vendors of the Panthoibi temporary market at Khwairamban Keithel stopped their daily work and joined the protest against the Citizenship Amendment Bill, a market committee official said.

Imphal, Nov 19 (PTI) Normal life was crippled in Manipur on Tuesday in an 18-hour shutdown called to protest against the proposed Citizenship Ammendment Bill (CAB) which is likely to introduced in the ongoing winter session of Parliament.

The shutdown was called jointly by Manipur People Against Citizenship Ammendment Bill (MANPAC) and North East Forum for Indigenous People (NEFIP) and there was no report of any untoward incident during the strike, which ended at 6 pm Tuesday, the police said.

Imphal, Nov 13 (PTI) The Congress has asked Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh to give a written assurance that the state's territorial integrity would be safeguarded while resolving the vexed Naga issue.

Urging people to have trust in the government, the chief minister had said that Union Home Minister Amit Shah had assured state government representatives during a meeting on November 10 that all stakeholders would be consulted before inking a final accord with the Nagas.

Imphal, May 8 (PTI) Vigilance has been stepped up by the Assam Rifles along the India-Myanmar border in Manipur to check possible human trafficking and illegal drug trade, an official of the paramilitary force said here Wednesday.

The locals, mostly traders travelling to the border town of Moreh, have been asked to travel with proper identity proofs, the official said.

The existing bilateral agreement allowed local residents of both the countries to travel up to 16 km from the border without travel documents.

Imphal, Mar 31 (PTI) A constable of the Manipur police, who was suspended and arrested in connection with the escape of an undertrial prisoner, died in custody here, a senior police officer said Sunday.

A magisterial enquiry was ordered into the custodial death of Manjur Ahmed and a police inspector was suspended, Director General of Police L M Khaute said.

Imphal, Mar 24 (PTI) Congress' Manipur unit has accused the BJP of putting up an insurgent-backed candidate for a Lok Sabha seat here and compromising national integrity in a bid to win the upcoming elections at any cost, a charge rejected by the latter as an attempt to malign the party.

BJP's candidate H Shukhopao Mate for the Outer Manipur parliamentary constituency, which goes to polls on April 11, has been accused of being backed by insurgent groups in the state -- Zomi Re-unification Organisation (ZRO) and Kuki National Organisation (KNO).

Imphal, Feb 12 (PTI) An indefinite curfew was imposed in Manipur capital Imphal on Tuesday and mobile internet services suspended till February 16 across the state in view of the continued protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, officials said.

The state capital straddles Imphal East and Imphal West districts.

The authorities clamped curfew in the state capital amid reports that the contentious bill will be tabled in the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday. The legislation was, however, not presented in the Upper House.

Imphal, Feb 9 (PTI) Markets were closed and effigies of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and others were burnt and roads were blocked as protests against the controversial Citizenship (Amendment) Bill (CAB) continued across Manipur on Saturday.

Vendors of the Khwairamband Market here, considered the largest women's market in the world, was also closed as they rendered their support to the on-going protest demanding withdrawal of the CAB.

Imphal, Feb 7 (PTI) A mass protest against the contentious Citizenship (Amendment) Bill was held on the roads of Manipur for the second day Thursday and security forces burst tear gas shells at a place near here to disperse protestors, officials said.

However, no one was injured in the incident.
