Protests against Indian Citizenship Bill in Manipur

Imphal, Jan 14 (PTI) Protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill were held in parts of Manipur by Manipur Peoples Party (MPP) and six students' organisations on Monday.

The protestors, who took out processions and staged sit-ins in various districts, demanded to know the stand of the BJP-led state government on the contentious bill.

MPP president O Jugindro said the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, if passed in the Rajya Sabha, would reduce the population of indigenous people of the northeastern states, including Manipur, to "microscopic minority".

Indian Journalists' Union condemn detention of scribe under NSA

Imphal, Dec 25 (PTI) The All Manipur Working Journalists' Union (AMWJU) and Editors' Guild Manipur (EGM) Tuesday condemned the detention of journalist Kishorchandra Wangkhem under the stringent National Security Act (NSA).

In a joint special general body meeting held on Tuesday at the Manipur Press Club, here both AMWJU and EGM condemned the detention of Wangkhem under NSA, said a press release issued by Sukham Nanda, the general secretary of AMWJU.

India: Five policemen suspended after man picked up by security

Imphal, Dec 21 (PTI) Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh Friday told the state Assembly that five policemen have been suspended after a man picked up by security forces in Thoubal district on Wednesday was found dead on Thursday.

In reply to a call attention motion moved by opposition Congress MLA Kh Joikishan Singh, the chief minister further informed that his government has asked the Assam Rifles authorities to make arrangements for surrender of AR personnel who were involved in the arrest of the person along with the suspended five policemen.

India: Manipur journalist arrested under NSA

Imphal, Dec 1 (PTI) An Imphal-based journalist has been arrested under the National Security Act (NSA) for allegedly uploading videos criticising the BJP-led governments in Manipur and the Centre for observing Rani Jhansi's birth anniversary.

Kishorechand Wangkhem is a journalist of a local TV channel and the videos which he had uploaded on November 19 in both English and Meitei were not related to his official work, officials said.

Police arrests 5 killers of MBA student Md. Farooque Khan - remaining 8 on loose

Manipur, Imphal; 16 Sep 2018: Md. Farooque Khan 26, an MBA student, was killed by a Mob in Thaoroijam Awang Leikai area in Manipur state. He was on his way to meet a friend with two companions in his car. Car was stopped by the mob and torched. Two of Khan’s companions ran away but Khan was caught and beaten brutally by the mob, in police presence. Almost dead Khan was taken to hospital and died there.

MBA student lynched in Manipur, 2 friends ran to save their lives

A 26 year old MBA student has been lynched by a mob in Manipur for suspicion of being a car thief. Two others in the car ran to save their lives when it was torched by the mob.

Video of this lynching has become viral on the social media.

Student was travelling through Thouroijam Avang Leikai when he was beaten to death by the mob, which includes a Havaldar from India Reserve Battalion.

NIA recovers Rs 40L cash, DeMO notes in Manipur terror-financing case

PTI; New Delhi, Jul 3 : Over Rs 40 lakh in cash, demonetised currency notes and gold have been recovered by the NIA, following searches at the residence of a former director of an Imphal-based medical institute as part of a terror-financing probe against a banned outfit in Manipur.
