Imran Khan again targets Pakistan's establishment on Day 2 of protest march; govt rules out talks over snap polls

Islamabad, Oct 29 (PTI) Imran Khan on Saturday again targeted the powerful establishment, saying the people of Pakistan should not be treated like “goats and sheep”, even as the coalition government ruled out any negotiations with the former prime minister on holding snap elections.

The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief addressed the participants of his long march on the Day 2 of his protest rally at Shahdara area of Lahore before leading them to Islamabad in a convoy of vehicles.

Pakistani ex-PM Khan, supporters start march to Islamabad

LAHORE, Pakistan (AP) — Pakistan’s former Prime Minister Imran Khan and thousands of supporters started a long-promised march on Friday to the nation’s capital, Islamabad, to challenge the government of his successor and demand early elections.

Khan maintains that his ouster in a parliament no-confidence vote in April was unlawful, and a conspiracy by his political opponents orchestrated by the United States — a charge denied by both Washington and Pakistan’s new premier, Shahbaz Sharif.

Death Toll From Floods In Pakistan Rose To 1,731

ISLAMABAD, Oct 24 (NNN-APP) – The death toll from this season’s monsoon rain and floods, in Pakistan, since mid-June, has risen to 1,731, along with 12,867 injuries, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) said.

According to a report by NDMA, on Saturday night, 645 children and 350 women were among those who lost their lives, in separate rain or flood-related incidents, in the country, so far.

ADB approves 1.5 bln USD to promote social protection, food security in Pakistan

ISLAMABAD, Oct. 21 (Xinhua) -- The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has approved 1.5 billion U.S. dollars in financing to help Pakistan provide social protection, promote food security and support employment for its people amid devastating floods, the ADB said on Friday.

The loan is part of ADB's significant response package to support people, livelihoods and infrastructure in Pakistan in the wake of the recent floods which have affected over 33 million people and caused extensive damage to infrastructure and agriculture, the ADB said in a statement.

Pakistan’s election commission bars ex-PM Khan from office

ISLAMABAD (AP) — Pakistan’s elections commission on Friday disqualified former Prime Minister Imran Khan from holding public office for five years, after finding he had unlawfully sold state gifts and concealed assets as premier, officials said.

The move is likely to deepen lingering political turmoil in the impoverished Islamic country struggling with a spiraling economy, food shortages and the aftermath of unprecedented floods this summer that killed 1,725 people, displaced hundreds of thousands and triggered a surge in malaria and other flood-related disease.

Revocation of Afghan student’s visas exposes India’s apathy towards war-hit Afghanistan

ISLAMABAD, Oct 19 (APP): The Indian apathy towards the people of war-hit Afghanistan stood exposed as the Narendra Modi government revoked the visas of Afghan students enrolled in Indian universities.

According to the media reports, out of an estimated 14,000 Afghan students currently enrolled in 73 Indian universities, about 2,500 have been restrained from returning to India who were desperate to continue their education.

Report: Taliban killed captives in restive Afghan province

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan (AP) — The Taliban captured, bound and shot to death 27 men in Afghanistan’s Panjshir Valley last month during an offensive against resistance fighters in the area, according to a report published Tuesday, refuting the group’s earlier claims that the men were killed in battle.

One video of the killings verified by the report shows five men, blindfolded with their hands tied behind their backs. Then, Taliban fighters spray them with gunfire for 20 seconds and cry out in celebration.

ISLAMABAD, Oct. 17 (Xinhua) -- Pakistan currently stands at a critical moment as it is embarking on a road to recovery in the aftermath of climate change-induced devastating floods, Pakistani Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif said in marking World Food Day.

The day is observed to create awareness about global hunger, malnutrition and the need for collective actions to ensure food and nutritional security for all, the prime minister was quoted as saying in a statement on Sunday.

Pakistani flood victims in worst-hit province return home

ISLAMABAD (AP) — More than half of the flood victims in Pakistan’s worst-hit Sindh province have returned to their homes over the past three weeks as the waters there gradually receded, officials said Monday.

The announcement came as Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif visited the district of Jaccobabad in Sindh, from where he was traveling to the town of Sohbatput in another flood-stricken province, Baluchistan, his office said.
