India: Kejriwal congratulates people of Punjab for 'this revolution' as AAP appears set for big win

Chandigarh, Mar 10 (PTI) As the AAP appeared set for a clean sweep in Punjab, the party's national convener Arvind Kejriwal on Thursday congratulated the people of the state for this revolution .

"Many congratulations to the people of Punjab for this revolution, Kejriwal, the Delhi chief minister, said in a tweet in Hindi.

In the tweet, he also posted a picture of him standing with the AAP's chief ministerial candidate and MP Bhagwant Mann, with both leaders flashing victory sign.

India: Punjab polls: Nearly 70 pc voter turnout till 5 pm

Chandigarh, Feb 20 (PTI) A voter turnout of nearly 70 per cent was recorded till 5 pm in Punjab, where polling for 117 assembly seats was held on Sunday.

The final turnout figure at the end of polling at 6 pm is not yet available and officials here said that they are still compiling the data.

The Punjab election office had released a polling percentage of 63.44 till 5 pm.

Later, at midnight, the Election Commission's Voter Turnout App released an updated percentage of 69.65 for polling till 5 pm.

India: Court sentences man to death for raping minor in Punjab

Kapurthala (Punjab), Feb 10 (PTI) A fast track court here on Thursday awarded death sentence to a man for raping a seven-year-old girl.

Judge Rajwinder Kaur of Additional District and Sessions Court, which is the special Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) court, also directed the district legal services authority (DLSA) to give a compensation of Rs 8 lakh to the victim's family.

India: Navjot Sidhu a hero, will remain so: Wife

Chandigarh, Feb 3 (PTI) With the Congress likely to announce its CM face for the Punjab Assembly polls on February 6, state party president Navjot Singh Sidhu's wife on Thursday said it doesn't matter who becomes the CM, her husband will remain a hero.

Whoever the CM may be, it does not matter, Navjot Kaur Sidhu said.

Navjot Singh Sidhu is a hero and he will remain a hero, she said while talking to reporters in Amritsar.

India: 4-year-old girl raped in Punjab's Hoshiarpur

Hoshiarpur, Feb 4 (PTI) A four-year-old girl was allegedly raped by a 19-year-old labourer here, police said on Friday.

According to local Tanda police station SHO Sub-Inspector Harinder Singh, accused Anand Kumar was arrested under relevant sections of the IPC and the Protection of Children From Sexual Offences Act.

The victim's mother said in a complaint that she found the accused raping her daughter, the police said.

She raised an alarm, and the accused was overpowered and handed over to the police, they said.

India: Channi to file defamation case against Delhi Kejriwal

Chandigarh, Jan 21 (PTI) Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi on Friday said he would file a defamation case against AAP leader Arvind Kejirwal, who has dubbed him as a dishonest man after the ED carried out raids at many places including at the premises of the Congress leader's nephew.

Channi alleged that Kejriwal was in the habit of levelling accusations to malign the image of others and that in the past it was seen how he had to later apologise to BJP leaders Nitin Gadkari, late Arun Jaitley and SAD leader Bikram Singh Majithia.

India: SSP Ferozepur among 7 IPS officers transferred in Punjab

Chandigarh, Jan 8 (PTI) The Punjab government on Saturday transferred seven IPS officers including Senior Superintendent of Police, Ferozepur.

IPS officer Harmandeep Singh Hans, SSP Ferozepur, has been posted as Commandant 3rd IRB, Ludhiana.

Narinder Bhargav will be the new SSP Ferozepur.

Hans was Ferozepur SSP during the Wednesday security lapse in which Prime Minister Narendra Modi's convoy was stranded on a flyover.

India: Channi uses Sardar Patel's quote to target PM

Chandigarh, Jan 8 (PTI) Insisting that there was no threat to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's life during his recent Ferozepur visit, Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi on Saturday sought to target him with a remark of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel.

One who cares for his life more than duty, he should not take big responsibilities in a country like India, Channi took to Twitter to quote Sardar Patel.

India: PM Modi arrives Punjab, tight security arrangements made

Chandigarh, Jan 5 (PTI) Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday arrived in Punjab to lay foundation stones for development projects at Ferozepur.

Modi landed in Bathinda and then headed for the district located along the Indo-Pak border.

"He has arrived in Punjab and is on his way to Ferozepur," Inspector General of Police (Bathinda Range) Jaskaran Singh told PTI over phone.

Hours before his Punjab visit, the prime minister in a tweet on Wednesday said that he was looking forward to "being among my sisters and brothers of Punjab today".
