Sudan Army Chief says he will accept any non-partisan government

23 Nov 2022; MEMO: Sudan's Army Chief, Gen. Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, said Wednesday that the military will accept any non-partisan government that maintains the country's unity, Anadolu News Agency reports.

"Any formula that ensures Sudan's unity and preserves the dignity of the disciplined forces … and that brings a non-partisan government of independents approved by political forces will be acceptable by the Armed Forces," Al-Burhan told a meeting of army commanders.

Sudan army sets conditions for elections

07 Nov 2022; MEMO: Sudan's tripartite mechanism yesterday said it was hoping that the consultations between the country's army and civilians would end "within two weeks."

The demands by the United Nations, the African Union, and the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) came after Sudanese army leaders announced the conditions to approve a draft transitional constitution proposed by the country's Bar Association.

Sudan supports OPEC+ decision to reduce oil production

KHARTOUM, Oct 19 (NNN-Xinhua) — Sudan declared Tuesday its support for the recent decision by the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) and its partners, collectively referred to as OPEC+, to cut back on oil production.

“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has followed up on the consequences of the OPEC+ decision to reduce oil production, the campaign against the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and the attempts to hold it responsible for the repercussions of the decision,” the ministry said in a statement.

Sudan and UAE discuss Red Sea port construction

17 October 2022; MEMO: Sudan is in talks with the United Arab Emirates on a project to build a port along the country's Red Sea coast, the Sudanese finance minister announced yesterday.

Gibril Ibrahim told reporters in the United States that his government had signed an agreement with the UAE to build the port. His remarks came on the fringes of the International Monetary Fund meetings in Washington DC.

Sudan's schools: 7m children without education

8 October 2022; MEMO: A shocking statistic published by the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) confirmed that 6.9 million Sudanese children do not attend school. This means that one out of every three school-aged children in the country does not receive an education, while another 12 million children do not receive a quality education.

US warns Sudan against hosting Russia military facility

28 Sep 2022; MEMO: US Ambassador to Khartoum, John Godfrey, yesterday warned the Sudanese government of the repercussions of allowing Russia to build a military base in the Red Sea, the Anadolu news agency reported.

In an interview with the Tayyar newspaper, Godfrey said: "There are some reports that Russia is trying to implement the agreement it signed with ousted President Omar Al-Bashir in 2017 to establish a military base along the Red Sea."

Sudan: Burhan calls on AU to 'correct' decision to freeze Sudan's activities

24 Sep 2022; MEMO: The President of the Transitional Sovereignty Council General Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan called on the African Union (AU) on Friday to "correct" its decision to freeze his country's activities in the AU after measures taken on 25 October.

This was raised during his meeting with Senegalese President Macky Sall at his residence in New York City.

Situation deteriorating in Sudan, UN warns

10 Sep 2022; MEMO: In the absence of effective solutions to restore a "credible democratic transition", the United Nations (UN) warned of the deteriorating situation in Sudan.

In a report, which Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Sudan Volker Perthes intends to present before the UN Security Council next week, the UN drew attention to the rise in human rights violations and economic and security deteriorations.

West accuses Sudan military of retreating from cooperation with ICC

26 August 2022; MEMO: The ambassadors of 11 Western countries and the European Union delegation in Khartoum yesterday accused the military rulers in Sudan of retreating from cooperating with the International Criminal Court (ICC) since seizing power in a coup last October, Anadolu news agency reported.
