Tunisia, Syria issue joint statement on strengthening solidarity, cooperation

TUNIS, April 18 (Xinhua) -- Tunisia and Syria on Tuesday issued a joint statement underlining bilateral solidarity and cooperation in face of the growing regional and international challenges.

The statement, made on the occasion of Syrian Foreign Minister Faisal Mekdad's visit to Tunisia, highlighted the necessity of preserving Syria's sovereignty, stability and territorial integrity, and pushing forward regional and international efforts for a political settlement of the Syrian crisis and the full restoration of its sovereignty.

Tunisia's Ennahda Party leader Ghannouchi arrested by security forces for interrogation

17 Apr 2023; MEMO: Tunisian security forces late Monday arrested Ennahda Party leader Rached Ghannouchi and took him in for interrogation at a National Guard building in the capital Tunis.

In a statement on Facebook, senior Ennahda Party official and former Foreign Minister Rafik Abdessalem said that security forces raided Ghannouchi's home and took him to the El-Aouina National Guard base, in northern Tunis.

Tunisian authorities have yet to comment on the arrest.

Tunisia, Syria to reopen embassies after 11 years

TUNIS, April 13 (NNN-AGENCIES) — Tunisia and Syria decided to reopen their respective embassies to resume diplomatic ties between the two countries, the Tunisian Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced on Wednesday.

“Following the initiative undertaken by President Kais Saied to appoint a Tunisian ambassador to Syria, the Syrian side gave their approval to this appointment,” reads a ministry statement.

“The Syrian side also decided to reopen its embassy in Tunis, and to designate an ambassador immediately,” it added.

Tunisia Foiled Over 500 Illegal Immigration Attempts In Q1

TUNIS, Apr 8 (NNN-TAP) – The Tunisian coast guards have thwarted 501 illegal immigration attempts, in the first quarter of this year, the Tunisian National Guard said, yesterday.

A total of 14,406 people, including 13,138 from sub-Saharan African countries, were rescued between Jan and Mar, while trying to cross the Mediterranean Sea towards the Italian coast, Spokesman for the Tunisian National Guard, Houcemeddine Jbabli, said in a statement.
