Turkiye asks new Swedish government to take counter-terrorism steps needed for NATO membership

14 Sep 2022; MEMO: The new Swedish government should now address security concerns that Turkiye has raised in return for lifting its veto on Sweden and Finland's membership of NATO, Turkey's Foreign Minister said on Wednesday, Reuters reports.

The two countries applied to join the security alliance in response to Russia's invasion of Ukraine, but faced opposition from Turkiye which accuses them of imposing arms embargoes on Ankara and supporting groups it deems terrorists.

Turkiye backs Azerbaijan and Armenia should cease fire: Erdogan

15 Sep 2022; MEMO: Turkiye said, on Tuesday, it continued to back Azerbaijan and called on Armenia to "cease its provocations", after clashes erupted between the two South Caucasus countries that resumed decades-old hostilities, Reuters reports.

According to the report, Turkish Defence Minister, Hulusi Akar, held talks with Azeri counterpart, Zakir Hasanov, the Ministry said. "He emphasised that Turkiye has always stood by brotherly Azerbaijan and will continue to stand by it in its just causes," it said.

Turkey's Erdogan: Armenian attitude towards Azerbaijan will have consequences

ANKARA, Sept 14 (Reuters) - Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan said on Wednesday Armenia's attitude towards Azerbaijan was unacceptable and would have consequences, after days of clashes between the two neighbours.

"We find the situation that has occurred due to Armenia's violation of the agreement - reached after the (2020) war that resulted in the victory of Azerbaijan - to be unacceptable," Erdogan told a rally in the Turkish capital Ankara.

Turkish exports to Egypt break record in 2022

14 Sep 2022; MEMO: Turkish exports to Egypt reached an all-time high of $2.8 billion from January through August, Anadolu reported yesterday, citing data from the Turkish Exporters Assembly (TIM).

According to the report, the volume of Turkish exports to Egypt grew 17 per cent from January through August compared to the same period last year.

Turkiye: Shooting in Istanbul mall leaves 6 injured

12 Sep 2022; MEMO: At least six people were wounded, including one in critical condition after a shooting which took place inside a shopping mall in Istanbul, Turkiye, yesterday.

According to the Daily Sabah, the shooting broke out as a result of a dispute between two groups of people at a café in the Sariyer Mall. The altercation was caught on surveillance cameras.

Six injured in gunfight in Istanbul

ISTANBUL, Sept. 12 (Xinhua) -- A gunfight in a shopping mall left six people wounded on late Sunday in Istanbul's Sariyer district, local media reported on Monday.

"After the gunfight incident that broke out between two groups with a prior history of animosity, a total of six citizens, namely five foreign individuals and one Turkish citizen, were transferred to nearby hospitals for treatment," said local officials in a statement.

One person among the wounded was in critical condition.

Cargo ship fired on by Greek boats resumes journey in Turkey

11 Sep 2022; MEMO: A ship that came under fire from the Greek Coast Guard in international waters near southwestern Turkey a day ago resumed its journey on Sunday, Anadolu Agency reported.

The Anatolian, a Comoros-flagged cargo vessel, set off from Canakkale after completion of judicial and administrative formalities about Saturday's incident.

The ship will head for maintenance at a shipyard in the Inebolu district of Turkey's Kastamonu province.

Erdogan to urge Russia to send goods through Black Sea corridor

09 Sep 2022; MEMO: Turkish President, Tayyip Erdogan, will urge Moscow to send goods though an UN-backed Black Sea corridor when he meets Russian President, Vladimir Putin, next week, broadcaster Haberturk said on Friday, seeking to keep Russia engaged in the arrangement, Reuters reports.

Turkiye captures 'senior' Daesh leader

09 Sep 2022; MEMO: President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on 9 September that Turkish security forces had arrested a "senior executive" of Daesh, local Turkish media reports.

According to the report, Erdogan said the Daesh commander, known as Abu Zeyd, was captured by Turkish security forces.

Erdogan said a UN Security Council report published in July identified Sumaidai as "one of the senior executives of the (ISIL) terrorist organisation".
