Report: Apple to shift assembly of Mac Pro from US to China

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Apple will manufacture its new Mac Pro computer in China, shifting away from a U.S. assembly line it had been using for that product in recent years, according to a report published Friday.

The company intends to assemble the new Mac Pro in a factory near Shanghai, according to The Wall Street Journal , which cited unidentified people familiar with the plan.

Apple issued a statement saying the new Mac Pro will be designed and engineered in California, but wouldn’t say where it will be assembled.

Elton John blasts Putin for saying liberalism is ‘obsolete’

NEW YORK (AP) — Elton John on Friday called out Russian President Vladimir Putin for saying that liberalism is “obsolete” and conflicts with the “overwhelming majority” in many countries.

In a story published by the Financial Times newspaper , Putin said “the liberal idea has become obsolete. It has come into conflict with the interests of the overwhelming majority of the population.” John said in a statement released Friday that he disagrees with Putin’s “view that pursuing policies that embrace multicultural and sexual diversity are obsolete in our societies.”

Judge weighs new US policy keeping asylum seekers locked up

SEATTLE (AP) — Immigrant rights activists on Friday asked a U.S. judge to block a new Trump administration policy that would keep thousands of asylum seekers locked up while they pursue their cases, instead of giving them a chance to be released on bond.

Attorney General William Barr announced the policy in April as part of the administration’s efforts to deter a surge of migrants at the Mexico border, and it is scheduled to take effect July 15.

LGBTQ Victory Fund endorses Pete Buttigieg for president

NEW YORK (AP) — The largest political action committee dedicated to electing LGBTQ candidates endorsed Democrat Pete Buttigieg for president on Friday, saying he’s “redefining what is possible in American politics” and is the best person to defeat President Donald Trump.

LGBTQ Victory Fund President Annise Parker joined the 37-year-old gay mayor of South Bend, Indiana, during a World Pride campaign event in Brooklyn to make what she described as a “historic” announcement.

Alabama woman charged in fetal death, her shooter goes free

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — An Alabama district attorney’s office hasn’t decided whether to prosecute a woman indicted for manslaughter after she lost her fetus when she was shot during a fight.

Marshae Jones was five months pregnant when 23-year-old Ebony Jemison shot her in the stomach during a December altercation over the fetus’s father, authorities said.

Round 2 of Democratic debate is party’s most-watched ever

LOS ANGELES (AP) — NBC says round two of the Democratic presidential debate was the party’s most-watched ever.

Based on Nielsen figures out Friday, the event including early front-runners Joe Biden and Bernie Sanders averaged 18.1 million viewers across NBC, MSNBC and Telemundo.

That topped the previous Democratic debate audience high of 15.5 million for an October 2015 event, which included eventual nominee Hillary Clinton.

Viewership for that debate was previously estimated at 15.8 million.

NASA: Intense work under way on rocket for future moonshots

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Crews are working around the clock at a NASA rocket factory, intent on meeting a new fall 2020 deadline to test launch a mega-rocket designed to propel astronauts to the moon and beyond, a space agency official said Friday.

“I came out here in the middle of the night ... talking to people who were working on the engine section, working hard through the night,” NASA Deputy Administrator James Morhard said on a press tour at New Orleans’ Michoud Assembly Center .

Police arrest man suspected of killing Utah college student

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A Utah college student missing 11 days was abducted and killed and her remains burned in the yard of a man now facing aggravated murder and other charges, authorities said Friday.

Salt Lake City Police Chief Mike Brown, who became emotional at times during a morning press conference, said Ayoola A. Ajayi will be charged with aggravated murder, kidnapping, obstruction of justice and desecration of a body in the death of 23-year-old Mackenzie Lueck.

He was arrested without incident Friday morning by a SWAT team.
