India: Three men booked for raping a woman

Rishikesh, Aug 18 (PTI) Three men have been booked on charges of raping a woman and making viral a video of the crime, police said on Tuesday.

On the basis of the woman's complaint, a case under different sections of the Indian Penal Code, including section 376 (rape), and the IT Act has been registered against the accused, Rishikesh Kotwali in-charge Ritesh Shah said.

The accused have been named as Punit Kalra, Prince Sondhi and Manpreet Singh.

India: Ambedkar statue vandalised in Rishikesh

Rishikesh, Aug 13 (PTI) A statue of Babasaheb Bhimarao Ambedkar was vandalised here, sparking a protest by locals, police said on Thursday.People were irked to find that a book representing the Indian Constitution was missing from the statue's hand on late Wednesday evening, he said.

As the news of vandalism spread, locals gathered at the Ambedkar Chowk and created a ruckus demanding immediate action against the culprits, Kotwali inspector incharge Ritesh Shah said.

India: Haridwar Kumbh can't be deferred: Akhara Parishad

Haridwar, Jul 17 (PTI) Akhara Parishad, an apex body of saints and seers, on Friday said the schedule of 2021 Haridwar Kumbh cannot be deferred and it will have to be held on time.

"The anniversary of nectar drops falling into the Ganga falls in April 2021. So the schedule of the Kumbh cannot be deferred under any circumstances. It will have to be held as per its muhurat," Akhara Parishad chief Mahanth Narendra Giri Ji Maharaj told reporters here.

India: Bailey bridge near India-China border in U'khand collapses

Pithoragarh, Jun 23 (PTI) A bailey bridge in this district of Uttarakhand, nearly 50 km from the Sino-India border, collapsed when a truck carrying a JCB machine was crossing it, an official said on Tuesday.

The truck driver and the JCB machine operator were injured as the 40-feet-long bridge, built in 2009, crashed on Monday under the combined weight of the truck and the JCB machine, SDM of Munsyari A K Shukla said.

The weight-bearing capacity of the bridge was 18 tonne while the combined weight of the JCB machine and the truck was 26 tonnes, he said.

China has breached India's trust: Rawat

Dehradun, Jun 17 (PTI) Uttarakhand Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat on Wednesday said by assaulting unarmed Indian soldiers, China has once again breached India's trust as it did in 1962.

But China must realise it is not the India of 1962, he said.

"Our soldiers were unarmed. They didn't even have a baton in hand. By attacking them, China has breached India's trust as it had done in 1962," Rawat told reporters while paying tribute to Indian soldiers who were killed in the face-off along the LAC in Ladakh.

India: Uttarakhand scholars refute Nepal's claim on Kalapani

Pithoragarh (U'khand), Jun 14 (PTI) Uttarakhand scholars on Sunday cited scriptures and books written before Independence that showed Kalapani as the source of Kali river, a key factor in Indian claim to areas that Nepal has now incorporated in its own map.

The lower house of Nepalese parliament on Saturday approved the controversial map, triggering a strong protest from India.

The new Nepal map lays claim over Kalapani, Lipulekh and Limpiyadhura which India maintains are on its side of the border.

India: Gairsain declared summer capital of Uttarakhand

Dehradun, Jun 8 (PTI) Gairsain in Chamoli district was declared as the summer capital of Uttarakhand on Monday.

A notification in this regard was issued by Chief Secretary Utpal Kumar Singh after Governor Baby Rani Maurya gaver her assent to the move.

Expressing happiness on Gairsain being formally declared the summer capital of Uttarakhand, Pradesh BJP vice president Devendra Bhasin said by doing so the party has fulfilled a major promise made in its poll manifesto.

India: Tutor arrested for raping minor in Rishikesh

Rishikesh, Jun 6 (PTI) A private tutor was arrested here on Saturday for allegedly raping his minor student.

Parents of the student in their complaint to police said the tutor raped their 16-year-old daughter after showing her obscene videos on his mobile phone, Tehri's Additional SP Uttam Singh Negi said.

A case was registered against the accused, identified as Krishna alias Basu, under Section 376 of the IPC (rape) and the POCSO Act on Friday, he said.

Uttarakhand minister's wife tests positive for COVID-19

Dehradun, May 31 (PTI) Uttarakhand Tourism Minister Satpal Maharaj's wife and former minister Amrita Rawat has tested positive for COVID-19.

Maharaj, who had attended a meeting of the state cabinet on Friday last, and the rest of the family have been home quarantined at their residence in the city.

Rawat's swab sample report confirming that she is COVID-19 positive arrived from a private lab late on Saturday evening, the minister's OSD Abhishek Sharma said.
