India: Man gets life term for abducting, raping minor cousin

Gopeshwar, Nov 27 (PTI) A court in Uttarakhand's Chamoli district on Wednesday sentenced a man to life imprisonment for abducting and raping his minor cousin.

Special District and Sessions Judge Rajendra Singh sentenced Navin Chandra to life imprisonment in an open court for abducting and raping his 12-year-old cousin, special public prosecutor Mohan Pant said.

India: BJP wins majority of block pramukh seats in U'khand

Dehradun, Nov 6 (PTI) A majority of the BJP's block pramukh candidates won in Uttarakhand on Wednesday, with the party thanking the people of the state for reposing their faith in it once again.

Out of the total of 89 block pramukh posts that went to polls, 53 were won by the BJP, 20 by the Congress and 16 by Independents, according to the final results.

Polling was held on Wednesday and the results declared this evening.

India: Uttarakhand minister's social media accounts hacked

Dehradun, Nov 1 (PTI) The social media accounts of an Uttarakhand minister holding key portfolios have been hacked.

The Facebook, Twitter and Instagram accounts of Urban Development Minister Madan Kaushik were hacked at around 2.30 am on Thursday, his Public Relations Officer (PRO) Sumit Bhargav said on Friday.

The hackers also hacked the minister's Gmail account, he added.

India: Body of journalist found in forests of Uttarakhand

Pauri, Oct 17 (PTI) The body of a 43-year-old journalist was found in the forests of Dugadda range here on Thursday morning, officials said.

Prima facie, it appears to be a case of suicide, State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) unit incharge Inspector Gabar Singh Negi said.

The body of Pankaj Sharma was found in Lansdowne forest division at a distance of 250 metres from the national highway, he said.

12-day India-Kazakhstan joint military exercise begins

Pithoragarh, Oct 3 (PTI) A joint military exercise between India and Kazakhstan with focus on counter terrorism operations in mountainous terrain began here on Thursday.

The 12-day exercise named KAZIND-2019 was inaugurated by Brig SK Mandal, Commander of the 111 Independent Infantry Brigade.

It will will conclude on October 15, an Indian Army spokesman said.

India: Court sentences nine in Nari Niketan rape case

Dehradun, Sept 3 (PTI) A Dehradun court has sentenced the main accused in the rape and abortion case of a hearing and speech impaired inmate at a government-run shelter home here in 2015 to seven years in prison.

The court of Additional District and Sessions Judge Dharam Singh on Monday also imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 on Gurudas - the main convict in the case who worked as a sweeper at the Nari Niketan.

His jail term will be increased by 30 days in case he does not pay the fine, the ADSJ said while pronouncing the judgement.

India: Kashmiri students in D'dun get help from JKSA, Khalsa Aid

Dehradun, Aug 26 (PTI) The Jammu-Kashmir Students' Association (JKSA) and the Khalsa Aid jointly distributed groceries and money among Kashmiri students in Dehradun.

With restrictions continuing in the Valley since August 5, a number of Kashmiri students here have been out of touch with their families and suffering from a shortage of money, JKSA spokesman Nasir Khuehami said in a statement.

India: Minor gang-raped, killed in Uttarakhand

Pauri (UKD), Aug 8 (PTI) A ten-year-old girl from Nepal was raped and killed allegedly by two Nepalese nationals at Kotdwar in the district sparking tension in the area, police said on Thursday.

The partially mutilated body of the girl, who had been missing since Monday evening, was recovered from railway station premises after the perpetrators were arrested and confessed to the crime on Wednesday, Additional Superintendent of Police Pradip Rai said.

India: BJP CM of Uttarakhand says cow only animal that exhales oxygen

Dehradun, Jul 26 (PTI) Uttarakhand Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat has kicked up a row by claiming that cow is the only animal which inhales and exhales oxygen, and has asserted breathing problems can be cured by massaging it.

A video went viral on Thursday showing Rawat extolling the medicinal properties of cow milk and urine at a function here.

In the video, he said cows not only inhale oxygen but also exhale it.

India: Minor rapes 3-yr-old in Dehradun

Dehradun, Jun 21 (PTI) A three-year-old girl was allegedly raped by her 11-year-old neighbour in Dalanwala area of the city, police said Friday.

The incident took place on Wednesday when the girl's parents had gone out leaving her at home with her two elder siblings, an official said.

According to the complaint registered by the girl's parents on Thursday, the accused took the victim to his house and raped her, Superintendent of Police (city) Shweta Choubey said.

The boy was booked under the POCSO act and has been sent to a juvenile home, she said.
