Israel dismisses probes into 90% of anti-Arab religious hate crimes

17 June 2021; MEMO: Israel has reportedly closed nine out of ten investigations into anti-Arab religious hate crime cases between 2018 and 2020 on account of not being able to locate the perpetrators. The cases entailed the vandalising of at least ten mosques and churches in both the occupied West Bank and within Israel. A decision by the State Prosecutor's Office is yet to be made regarding the tenth case.

Israel: far-right 'plays politics' with apartheid law to embarrass government

17 June 2021; MEMO: Far-right opposition parties in Israel have claimed victory after embarrassing the new coalition government by ensuring that it failed to extend an apartheid law barring Palestinian family reunification. The law, which prevents Palestinians who marry Israeli citizens from receiving citizenship, failed to get its usual backing from the right-wing bloc.

Israel cop charged one year after killing autistic Palestinian

17 June 2021; MEMO: An Israeli Border Police officer has been charged with reckless homicide following the murder of Eyad Al-Hallaq, an autistic Palestinian resident of East Jerusalem.

The 20-year-year-old Border Police officer had charges filed by the police misconduct investigation unit today and faces up to 12 years in prison.

India: Man arrested for killing wife over dowry

New Delhi, Jun 17 (PTI) A 29-year-old man was arrested on Thursday for allegedly strangulating his newly-wed wife to death after a fight over dowry in south Delhi's Maidangarhi area, police said.

The accused, Kuldeep Singh Rana, works as an assistant to a contractor, they said.

On Wednesday, Rana and his wife (25) returned to Delhi from the woman's parental house at Golapar in Uttarakhand. Later, Rana beat his wife after consuming alcohol leading to her death, police said.

17 June 2021; MEMO: The Israeli military has said that it is planning to curb the number of highly controversial night raids on Palestinian homes which for decades have been the cause of fear, trauma and, occasionally, death for Palestinians living under the state's brutal military occupation.

India: Court orders immediate release of 3 student activists from jail

New Delhi, June 17 (PTI) A Delhi court on Thursday ordered immediate release of student activists Devangana Kalita, Natasha Narwal and Asif Iqbal Tanha in the north- east Delhi riots 'conspiracy' case.

The order came two days after the Delhi High Court granted bail to Narwal, Kalita and Tanha, who were arrested in May last year under the stringent Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA).

India: IT Minister Prasad slams Twitter for not complying with new IT rules

New Delhi, Jun 16 (PTI) IT Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad on Wednesday slammed Twitter for deliberate defiance and failure to comply with the country's new IT rules, which has led to the US giant losing its intermediary status in India and becoming liable for users posting any unlawful content.

Twitter has allegedly not fully complied with the new rules, called Intermediary Guidelines that call for setting up grievance redressal mechanism and appointing officers to coordinate with law enforcement.

India: Covid-hit family starves at home, hospitalised

Aligarh (UP), Jun 16 (PTI) A Covid widow who lost her job due to the pandemic and her five children have been admitted to a hospital here, apparently after going without food for days.

Doctors at the Malkhan Singh District Hospital said the six family members were barely able to talk or stand up when they were admitted on Tuesday by some Good Samaritans.
