Turkey businessman's lawyers complain to UN after UAE tortures detainee

13 Jan 2021; MEMO: Lawyers of Turkish businessman Mehmet Ali Ozturk, who has been detained in the UAE for nearly three years, have filed an urgent complaint to the United Nations accusing the Emirati authorities of torturing their client.

On 20 February 2018, Ozturk was arrested in Dubai after arriving in the country with his wife, Amina Ozturk, to attend the Gulfood Manufacturing Fair.

India: Farmers in Punjab burn copies of farm laws on Lohri

Chandigarh, Jan 13 (PTI) Farmers in Punjab on Wednesday burnt copies of the Centre's three new farm laws at several places on the festival of Lohri as a mark of protest against the legislations.

The harvest festival of Lohri is celebrated in Punjab, Haryana and other parts of north India. Bonfires are an important part of the festivities.

India: Farmer leaders welcome SC staying 3 agri laws but protest to continue

New Delhi, Jan 12 (PTI) Farmer leaders welcomed the Supreme Court order to stay the implementation of three farm laws on Tuesday, but said they would not call off their protest until the legislations are repealed.

The Sankyukt Kisan Morcha, an umbrella body of around 40 protesting farmer unions, has called a meeting later in the day to decide the next course of action.

Indian Supreme Court stays implementation of contentious new farm laws

Delhi; 12 January 2021 (UMMN): Indian Supreme Court has stayed implementation of three new farm laws that is fiercely opposed by the farmers.

“We are staying three farm laws until further orders,” Chief Justice of India (CJI) Sharad A. Bobde said.

The stay on their implementation means the Centre cannot proceed with any executive actions to enforce the laws.

India: Sonia in touch with oppn leaders for joint strategy on farm laws

New Delhi, Jan 11 (PTI) Ahead of the Budget Session of Parliament this month, Congress chief Sonia Gandhi is in touch with leaders of various opposition parties who will soon meet to chalk out their joint strategy to corner the government on farm laws, sources said on Monday.

Gandhi is learnt to have started talking to opposition leaders for holding a joint meeting of various parties ahead of the session.

India: Farmers threaten to 'gherao' UP Raj Bhavan

Ghaziabad, Jan 11 (PTI) A section of farmers protesting against the three central farm laws on Monday threatened to gherao' Uttar Pradesh Raj Bhavan on January 23.

Bhartiya Kisan Union spokesperson Dharmendra Malik in a statement said the agitating farmers would also burn copies of farm legislation on that day.

UAE receives first shipment of Israel settlement goods

11 Jan 2021; MEMO: The first shipment from illegal Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank were exported to the UAE yesterday, local media reported.

The Jerusalem Post reported that the shipment included olive oil and honey from the Tura Winery in the Rehelim settlement and Paradise Honey in the Hermesh settlement.

11 Jan 2021; MEMO: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is planning chaos in Israel more dangerous than what happened in Capitol Hill, the Shehab News Agency reported former Defence Minister Avigdor Lieberman saying.

"What we have seen on the Capitol is nothing compared to what is being prepared by Netanyahu if he felt he would lose the elections," Lieberman was quoted saying by Israeli news sources quoted by Shehab.

India: AAP MLA arrested in UP, youth hurls ink at him

Amethi/Rae Bareli, Jan 11 (PTI) Aam Aadmi Party MLA Somnath Bharti on Monday had ink hurled at him in Rae Bareli and was arrested later for allegedly making objectionable remarks against the Uttar Pradesh government and the state's hospitals.

He was arrested for criminal intimidation and promoting enmity between groups, police said.

Hours earlier, a youth hurled ink at the Delhi MLA's face when he was emerging out of a guest house. Police said they are investigating into the incident.
