India: Protesting farmers call on people to back 'Bharat Bandh'

New Delhi, Dec 7 (PTI) Thousands of farmers protesting against the Centre's new agri laws for the past 11 days here have called on people to join their 'Bharat Bandh' on Tuesday in large numbers, as police increased deployment at various Delhi border points.

Farmer leaders also welcomed the support of political parties to the nationwide strike against the laws and demanded that the legislations be repealed.

India: Woman raped by landlord, his brother in UP

Muzaffarnagar, Dec 7 (PTI) A 30-year-old married woman was allegedly raped by her landlord and his brother here, police said Monday.

The victim was raped seven months ago and the accused recorded a video of the incident, police outpost in-charge Lekhraj Singh said.

The accused are absconding and an investigation is underway, the police said.

Former Israel minister describes nation-state law as 'self-incrimination of Israel'

05 Dec 2020; MEMO:  Former Israeli Justice Minister Yossi Beilin on Thursday described the Israeli nation-state law as "self-incrimination of Israel" and "contrary to everything that Judaism represents."

In an article published by the Israeli newspaper Israel Hayom, Beilin said that the nation-state law: "Provides a reference to repeated claims by its [Israel's] enemies… [It] is a ringing slap in the face to anyone who supports Israel in the world."

UN chief Guterres, 36 UK lawmakers express support for farmers' protest in India

United Nations/London, Dec 5 (PTI) The spokesperson for UN chief Antonio Guterres and a group of 36 cross-party UK parliamentarians have come out in support of the agitating Indian farmers, saying people have a right to demonstrate peacefully and authorities should let them do so.

These reactions came even as Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau reiterated his support for the protesting farmers despite India's strong reaction to his earlier remarks that Canada will always be there to defend the rights of peaceful protests.

India: CAA likely to be implemented from Jan: Vijayvargiya

Barasat (WB), Dec 5 (PTI) Senior BJP leader Kailash Vijayvargiya on Saturday said that the Citizenship (Amendment) Act is likely to be implemented from January next year as the Centre and the saffron party are keen to grant citizenship to the large refugee population in West Bengal.

The BJP national general secretary accused the TMC government of not being sympathetic to the cause of the refugees.

UK rights groups decry France's anti-Muslim drive

04 Dec 2020; MEMO:  British advocacy groups have condemned France's decision to shut down anti-racism group Collective Against Islamophobia in France (CCIF), Anadolu Agency reports.

While announcing the move on Wednesday, Gerald Darmanin, France's interior minister, accused the CCIF of carrying out "Islamist propaganda" for several years, allegations the group has vehemently refuted.

India: Man charged with attempt to murder for attending Tablighi event; HC says 'abuse of power'

Allahabad, Dec 4 (PTI) The Allahabad High Court has observed that the attempt to murder charge slapped against a Mau resident, who participated in the religious congregation organised by the Tablighi Jamaat at New Delhi in March, was reflective of "abuse of the power of law".

India: Man held for raping 14-year-old girl in UP's Mahoba

Mahoba (UP), Dec 5 (PTI) The police have arrested a man for allegedly raping a 14-year-old girl in a village in Uttar Pradesh's Mahoba district, officials said on Saturday.

SHO, Ajnar police station, Shashi Kumar Pandey said the incident took place late on Thursday evening and the 22-year-old accused was arrested on Saturday.

"A 14-year-old girl was raped when she had gone to pluck vegetables. Later, the accused had also threatened to kill her, if she told anyone about the incident. Thereafter, the accused had fled from the spot," the SHO said.

New Delhi, Dec 5 (PTI) Tents pitched on tractors, people busy chopping vegetables to get food ready, solar panels to charge mobile phones, medical camps and even hookahs -- once a thoroughfare teeming with traffic, Delhi's Tikri border resembles a 'pind' (village) now.

Living in this village are farmers who have come largely from neighbouring Punjab to demand a repeal of the Centre's three agriculture reform laws.

UN General Assembly votes in favour of affirming Syria sovereignty over Golan Heights

04 Dec 2020; MEMO: The United Nations General Assembly on Wednesday voted with an overwhelming majority in favour of a draft resolution affirming Syria's sovereignty over the occupied Golan Heights, and considering all Israeli procedures in them null and void.
