Syria: Displaced children run after rubbish truck scavenging for food

04 Dec 2020; MEMO:  Displaced Syrian children have resorted to sifting through rubbish to look for food in the liberated territories of north-west Syria due to a shortage of humanitarian aid.

In a video posted on Tuesday by the Syrian Network for Human Rights, children can be seen running behind a rubbish truck transporting waste to a local landfill area in the opposition-held province of Idlib. The drone footage then shows the children gathering around the household waste and searching for food.

India: HC asks jail officials to shift Jamia student to guest house for exams

New Delhi, Dec 3 (PTI) The Delhi High Court Thursday directed the jail authorities to forthwith take Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) student Asif Iqbal Tanha, arrested in a case related to the northeast Delhi riots earlier this year, to a guest house to enable him to study and appear in examinations scheduled from Friday.

Justice Manoj Kumar Ohri also asked the jail superintendent to permit the accused to take studying material with him and provide him other teaching material, if required.

India: Arrested activist Varavara Rao to stay at private hospital till December 14: HC

Mumbai, Dec 3 (PTI) The Bombay High Court on Thursday said the condition of poet-activist Varavara Rao, arrested in the Elgar Parishad-Maoist links case, had improved but he will continue to remain at a private hospital till December 14.

A division bench of Justices S S Shinde and M S Karnik perused a medical report submitted by the Nanavati hospital here where Rao was admitted on November 18.

Chinese official says Australian PM overreacted to tweet

Canberra, Dec 4 (AP-PTI) China's senior diplomat in Australia said Prime Minister Scott Morrison overreacted to a social media post about alleged war crimes by Australian soldiers in Afghanistan, adding that his actions drew more attention to the report.

Earlier this week, Morrison said that a Chinese official's tweet showing the fake image of an Australian soldier appearing to slit a child's throat was truly repugnant and merits an apology, which has not come from China.

India: Farmers' protests gain momentum in Rajasthan

Jaipur/Kota, Dec 3 (PTI) Protests against the Centre's new farm laws gained momentum in Rajasthan on Thursday as farmer organisations blocked roads and held demonstrations and rallies in solidarity with thousands gathered at the national capital's borders as part of their 'Delhi Chalo' march.

A group of farmers, under the banner of Akhil Bhartiya Kisan Sangharsh Samanvay Samiti, held a protest at Jaipur's Surajpole mandi and blocked the Jaipur-Delhi highway for nearly an hour to demand a repeal of the laws.

India: Legal notice to Kangana for her tweet over farmers' protest

Mumbai, Dec 3 (PTI) A member of Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee on Thursday sent a legal notice to Bollywood actor Kangana Ranaut over her tweet allegedly targeting farmers protesting against the new farm laws.

The notice was sent by advocate Harpreet Singh Hora on behalf of the committee member Jasmain Singh Noni.

The notice said that when Ranaut's premises (in Mumbai) were demolished, she used social media "to gather solidarity" from her fans, stating that the action was an attack on her fundamental rights.

India: Debt-ridden farmer commits suicide in UP's Banda

Banda (UP), Dec 4 (PTI) A 55-year-old debt-ridden farmer allegedly committed suicide in a village here by hanging himself from a tree in his field, police said on Friday.

Chunbaddi had taken a loan of Rs 2.5 lakh from a bank and could not repay it, his wife Gangia Devi told police.

The body was found on Friday morning in Barai Maanpur village in Girwan area here, a police officer said.
