India: UP Cabinet passes ordinance to prevent cow slaughter

Lucknow, Jun 9 (PTI) To protect cows and prevent their slaughter, the Uttar Pradesh government on Tuesday approved a draft ordinance, providing a maximum rigorous imprisonment of 10 years and a fine up to Rs 5 lakh.

For the first offence, a person can be given a rigorous punishment of one to seven years with a fine ranging from Rs 1 lakh to Rs 3 lakh.

For the second offence, the person can be given a 10-year rigorous imprisonment with a fine up to Rs 5 lakh, a statement said.

Israel: Gantz to visit Jordan over West Bank annexation plans

09 June 2020; MEMO: Israeli Defence Ministry Benny Gantz is set to visit Jordan amid rising tensions between the two countries over plans to annex areas of the occupied West Bank and the strategic Jordan Valley, according to a report by London-based Arabic language news outlet Rai Al-Youm.

The report was also picked up by Israel’s Channel 12, which reported Gantz’s trip could involve an audience with King Abdullah II and a visit to the Jordanian capital, Amman.

India: SC seeks Centre's reply on plea alleging rise in child trafficking during lockdown

New Delhi, Jun 8 (PTI) The Supreme Court on Monday sought the Centre and NDMA's reply on a plea by an NGO alleging sudden rise in children trafficking cases during the COVID-19 lockdown in the country.

A bench comprising Chief Justice S A Bobde and Justices A S Bopanna and Hrisheksh Roy, in a hearing through video conferencing, sought the assistance of Solicitor General Tushar Mehta on the issue and indicated that it may appoint an experts committee to look into the child trafficking issue.

India: SC directs Centre, states to send migrant workers to their native places within 15 days

New Delhi, Jun 9 (PTI) The Supreme Court on Tuesday directed the Centre and state governments to send all the migrant workers to their native places within 15 days and formulate employment schemes after conducting their skill mapping to rehabilitate them.

A bench of Justices Ashok Bhushan, Sanjay Kishan Kaul and M R Shah also directed the Centre to provide additional trains within 24 hours of states making the demand for sending the migrant workers back to their native places.

India: Violence will never win in Kashmir: Rahul

New Delhi, Jun 8 (PTI) Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Monday said violence will never win in Kashmir, as he condoled the death of a sarpanch who was shot dead in Anantnag district this evening.

Ajay Pandita, a Kashmiri pandit sarpanch of the Larkipora area in Anantnag district and a member of the Congress party, was shot dead by militants in his native village around 6 pm, the police said.

Gandhi said Pandita sacrificed his life for the democratic process in Kashmir.

Rise in complaints against French police as public anger mounts

PARIS, June 9 (NNN-AGENCIES) — France’s police watchdog said it had received almost 1,500 complaints against officers last year, as the country reels from protests against perceived racism and brutality.

About half of the complaints were for alleged violence against civilians, according to a report of the IGPN watchdog, with President Emmanuel Macron urging government to “accelerate” steps to improve police ethics amid widespread public anger over alleged abuses.

US warns against dealing with top Iran shipper

WASHINGTON, June 9 (NNN-AGENCIES) — The United States warned that it would punish any country that deals with Iran’s top shipping company, accusing it of contributing to Tehran’s contested weapons programs.

The Treasury Department said sanctions came into effect Monday against the Islamic Republic of Iran Shipping Lines, known by its acronym IRISL, as well as its Shanghai-based subsidiary E-Sail.

Israeli Extremists Vandalise Palestinian Vehicles In West Bank

JERUSALEM, June 9 (NNN-WAFA) – Israeli extremists, carried out a hate crime attack in a West Bank town, vandalising vehicles and home walls, Palestinian residents and Israeli authorities said on Monday.

The attack took place before dawn in As-Sawiya, a Palestinian town, in the south of Nablus city, in the northern West Bank.

Police spokesman, Micky Rosenfeld, said that, the police received a report that “damage was caused to a number of vehicles and graffiti were found in the area.”

USA: Officer charged in Floyd’s death held on $1 million bail

In a tweet, Member of Kuwaiti National Assembly Mohammad Haif Al Mutairi urged his country’s Health Minister to immediately halt all health services-related contracts with India.
