Tourist visa scam traps Indian migrants in abusive jobs in UAE

16 Jan 2019; MEMO: Exploitative employers in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) are increasingly using tourist visas to hire Indians in a scam that leaves migrants open to labour abuse, police and activists said, Thomson Reuters Foundation reports.

Indian migrants on visit visas – quicker and cheaper to obtain than work permits – are wary of reporting exploitation on the job for fear of revealing their illegal status, they say.

Israel seizes Palestinian lands in Bethlehem

16 Jan 2019; MEMO: Israeli forces yesterday issued orders to seize hundreds of dunums of agricultural land in Bethlahm’s southern occupied towns of Al-Khader and Irtas.

The head of the Commission for the Resistance of the Wall and Settlements, Hasan Breijieh, told local media that the orders were issued to seize 350 dunums of agricultural land, with the aim “to expand Israel illegal settlements and bypass the roads of the Palestinian towns and villages in Bethlehem.”

Qatar to teach human rights in schools

15 Jan 2019; MEMO: The Qatari National Human Rights Committee (NHRC) and Ministry of Education and Higher Education yesterday launched the guide on human rights on the sidelines of the Doha International Book Fair.

The guide, which will be incorporated into the educational curricula from primary school during the next academic year, covers the right to identity, the right to play, the right to education, the right to health, the right to equality and others.

Israel rearrests Palestinian prisoner as he was being released

15 Jan 2019; MEMO: Israeli occupation authorities rearrested Palestinian Ismail Afanan as he was being released, Al-Quds newspaper reported yesterday.

The prisoner was taken out of Al Naqab Prison after completing an 18-year term but was rearrested and sent to Al Maskopia Detention Centre in Jerusalem.

Occupation authorities also issued summons to his brothers who were waiting for him at the prison gates.

Amnesty demands Israel prevent NSO from exporting spyware to rights abusers

15 Jan 2019; MEMO: Amnesty International has urged Israeli authorities to prevent notorious tech company NSO Group from exporting spyware products to human rights abusers, ahead of a court case starting tomorrow.

A judge at Tel Aviv District Court will tomorrow begin hearing arguments as to why the Israeli government should restrict the activities of NSO Group.

China makes fresh bid to raise Kashmir issue in UNSC

New Delhi, Jan 15 (PTI) China has made a fresh pitch to raise the Kashmir issue in a closed-door meeting of the UN Security Council in New York on Wednesday, but the attempt is likely to fail as all other member countries of the body are set to oppose it.

French diplomatic sources said France has noted the request of a UNSC member to raise the Kashmir issue once again in the powerful body and it is going to oppose it like it did on a previous occasion.

India: Broadband, 2G Internet partially restored in parts of Jammu

Srinagar, Jan 14 (PTI) The Jammu and Kashmir administration on Tuesday evening allowed mobile Internet in parts of Jammu region and broadband in hotels, travel establishments and hospitals but only on white-listed websites, official said.

In a three-page order, the home department said additional 400 internet kiosks will be established in Kashmir division.

India: AMU seeks registration of FIR against police excesses

Aligarh, Jan 15 (PTI) The Aligarh Muslim University has sought registration of an FIR against the police for allegedly indulging in excesses after entering a hostel on the night of December 15, officials said on Wednesday.

The move comes a month after violent clashes took place at the AMU.

AMU spokesperson Rahat Abrar told PTI, "The police is yet to register our FIR, although we have filed our complaint."
