India: Four pleas filed in SC seeking review of Ayodhya verdict

New Delhi, Dec 6 (PTI) Four separate petitions were filed in the Supreme Court on Friday seeking review of its November 9 verdict which cleared the way for construction of a Ram Temple at the disputed site in Ayodhya.

A 5-judge bench, headed by the then Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi, in a unanimous verdict on November 9 decreed the entire 2.77 acre disputed land in favour of deity 'Ram Lalla' and also directed the Centre to allot a 5-acre plot to Sunni Waqf Board for building a mosque in Ayodhya.

India: We are not criminals, says Farooq Abdullah

New Delhi, Dec 6 (PTI) "We are not criminals," says Lok Sabha member and National Conference president Farooq Abdullah in a letter to Congress leader Shashi Tharoor on his personal letterhead which mentions his residence as "sub-jail".

Abdullah, under detention since August 5 and subsequently booked under the stringent Public Safety Act (PSA) on September 17, is at present at his residence in Gupkar which has been declared as a sub-jail.

In rare legal test, Myanmar faces genocide hearings at The Hague

THE HAGUE, Dec 6 (NNN-AGENCIES) — Myanmar leader Aung San Suu Kyi will head a team of lawyers to hearings at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague next week to defend the country against accusations of genocide against the Rohingya Muslims.

The ICJ, also called the World Court, is the highest United Nations legal body, established in 1945 to deal with disputes between states. It should not be confused with the treaty-based International Criminal Court, also in The Hague, which handles war crimes cases against individuals.

UK and USA issue travel advisory to women visiting India

London/Washington DC; 29 Nov 2019 (UMM): British and US Governments have recently issued warnings, and detailed information sheets for its citizens travelling or staying in India.

India is fast building a reputation of being an unsafe place for women resulting some of the Western governments prompting to these advisory sheets being issued to its travellers.

UN: Justice has not been ensured over Khashoggi’s murder

05 Dec 2019; MEMO: The world has not done enough to ensure justice is done over the killing of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi, a United Nations (UN) investigator said on Tuesday.

Agnes Callamard, UN’s rapporteur for extrajudicial executions, called for more action from the European Union (EU) and the United States (US) over Khashoggi’s murder by the Saudi operatives at Riyadh’s consulate in Turkey’s Istanbul in 2018.

India: UNICEF organises seminar on child trafficking

New Delhi, Dec 4 (PTI) In an attempt to create awareness about child trafficking, the UNICEF organised a seminar on trafficking in India and South Asia here recently.

The seminar, which was attended by Queen Silvia of Sweden, discussed imperative issues such as sexual exploitation of children, forced labour, organ removal, bonded labour, domestic servitude, child marriage, illegal adoption, and pornography.

India: Five arrested for setting on fire UP rape survivor

Lucknow, Dec 5 (PTI) Five men have been arrested for allegedly setting on fire a woman, who was raped a year ago in Uttar Pradesh's Unnao district, police said on Thursday.

The woman, who is battling for life in a Lucknow hospital, had named five men, including two of the accused who are out on bail, police said.

India: Citizenship Bill to be introduced in Lok Sabha on Monday

New Delhi, Dec 5 (PTI) The Citizenship (Amendment) Bill is likely to be introduced in the Lok Sabha on December 9 and will be taken up for passage the next day, official sources said on Thursday.

The bill, which seeks to grant citizenship to non-Muslim immigrants from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan if they faced religious persecution there, will be tabled in the Rajya Sabha after being dealt with by the Lower House of Parliament.

Palestinian prisoners to begin open hunger strike in Israeli Ashkelon Prison

04 Dec 2019; MEMO: Palestinian prisoners in the Israeli Ashkelon Prison announced on Tuesday their intention to go on an open-ended hunger strike in protest against escalating repressive measures by the prison administration.

The Palestinian Prisoners’ Club said 33 prisoners will go on an open-ended hunger strike from Wednesday.

According to the Club, the prison administration has carried out a new repressive measure against the prisoners by transferring ten of them from the prison.
