India: Bill to deal with cow vigilantism tabled in MP assembly

Bhopal, Jul 17 (PTI) The Congress government in Madhya Pradesh Wednesday tabled a bill in the assembly that seeks to amend a BJP-era law to prescribe jail terms for violence in the name of cow vigilantism and ease bovine transportation.

Animal Husbandry Minister Lakhan Singh Yadav tabled the Madhya Pradesh Cow Progeny Slaughter Prevention (Amendment) Bill, 2019, in the ongoing monsoon session of the assembly.

Strategic paper underway to help Rohingya refugees, says Malaysian Foreign Minister

KUALA LUMPUR, July 17 (NNN-BERNAMA) — The Foreign Ministry is preparing a strategic paper to determine the optimum role Malaysia can play to help the Rohingya refugees, the Malaysian parliament (Dewan Rakyat) was told today.

Foreign Minister Datuk Saifuddin Abdullah said Malaysia has been consistent in championing the fate of the community, especially in bringing their oppressors to justice.

Senior Hamas delegation meets Russia officials in Moscow

17 July 2019; MEMO: A Hamas delegation headed by Dr Musa Abu Marzouq yesterday met with Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Michael Bogdanov in Moscow.

Abu Marzouq briefed the Russian official on the political developments of the Palestinian issue including the US’ “deal of the century”, stressing that all Palestinian people reject it.

The senior Russian official confirmed that Moscow is interested in following up on the political developments in Palestine and the region.

Egyptian parliament approves more NGO restrictions

17 July 2019; MEMO: The Egyptian parliament approved amendments to the controversial NGO law on Monday which place extra restrictions on the work of civil society groups, local and international media have reported. According to the parliamentary website, “The House of Representatives finally approved a number of important draft laws… including the bill regulating civil society’s work.”

Babri masjid demolition case: Special judge seeks 6 months to conclude

New Delhi, Jul 15 (PTI) A special judge holding trial in Babri Masjid demolition case, involving BJP veterans L K Advani, M M Joshi and others, Monday moved the Supreme Court seeking six more months to conclude the trial in the case.

The special judge, in a letter written in May, has informed the top court that he is due to superannuate on September 30, 2019.

Australia calls on China to let Uighur mother and son leave

Sydney, Jul 17 (AFP/PTI) Australia's government on Wednesday called on China to allow an Australian child and his Uighur mother to leave the country, stepping up pressure on Beijing days after Canberra co-signed a letter denouncing its treatment of the Muslim minority.

China has rounded up an estimated one million Uighurs and other mostly Muslim Turkic-speaking minorities into re-education camps in the tightly-controlled region of Xinjiang in the country's northwest.

US House votes to condemn Trump's racist tweets

Washington, Jul 17 (PTI) The US House of Representatives has voted a resolution to condemn President Donald Trump's alleged "racist" tweets against four Democartic congresswomen.

Trump, on Sunday, in a series of tweets said that four Democratic Progressive Congresswomen, who have been critical of his harsh immigration policies, should just "go back" to where they came from.

Press freedom under threat in India: Survey

New Delhi, Jul 16 (PTI) As many as 71 per cent people feel that press freedom is threatened in India, according to a new poll.

Neta app, a technology platform that lets users rate and review politicians, conducted a poll to get people's opinion with respect to freedom of press in the country.

The firm said more than 75,000 people across 19 states and the NCR took part in the poll.

UK PM hopefuls slam Trump tweets

London, Jul 16 (AFP/PTI) The two candidates vying to become Britain's next prime minister both condemned on Monday US President Donald Trump's xenophobic tweets about progressive Democrat congresswomen as "totally offensive" and "totally unacceptable".

But front-runner Boris Johnson and Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt refused to call the tweets racist when pressed to do so during their last debate before next week's announcement of who will succeed Prime Minister Theresa May.

New Zealand PM 'utterly' disagrees with Trump's racist tweets

Wellington, Jul 16 (AFP) New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern on Tuesday joined international condemnation of US President Donald Trump's xenophobic tweets about progressive Democrat congresswomen.

Ardern, the charismatic young leader who has been hailed as "the anti-Trump" by US media, said she proudly celebrated her country's diversity.

"Usually I don't get into other people's politics, but it will be clear to most people that I completely and utterly disagree with him," Ardern told Radio New Zealand.
