Iran minister criticize US arrest of newscaster

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — Iran kept up its criticism Thursday of the FBI’s apparent arrest of an American anchorwoman from Iran’s state-run English-language TV channel, with its foreign minister saying “she’s done nothing but journalism.”

The hard-line Vatan-e Emrooz paper criticized the detention of Press TV’s Marzieh Hashemi as “Saudi-style behavior with a critical journalist.” That’s a reference to the Oct. 2 assassination of Washington Post columnist Jamal Khashoggi at the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul.

German police raid suspected KKK members' homes

17 Jan 2019; DW: Police conducted raids on several properties throughout Germany thought to be connected to an extremist group that associates itself with the Ku Klux Klan. A total of 17 people are at the center of the investigation.

German police on Wednesday raided 12 apartments in eight different German states belonging to suspected members of an extreme-right group calling itself the National Socialist Knights of the Ku Klux Klan Deutschland.

The Prime Minister has stated in a public meeting at Kollam in Kerala that the stand of the LDF Government on the Sabarimala issue is “shameful”. This statement is atrocious and highly condemnable. He is admonishing an elected Government for implementing the judgement of the Supreme Court.

India: Rape victim commits suicide in UP

Gonda (UP), Jan 16 (PTI) A 35-year-old rape victim allegedly committed suicide by hanging herself at her home in Uttar Pradesh's Gonda district, a police official said Wednesday.

Two policemen have been suspended in connection with the incident which took place on Monday, said Gonda SP R P Singh.

The woman's husband has blamed police for inaction in the rape case.

"Police didn't conduct a thorough investigation, she did not get justice," the husband said.

India: Scrap sedition law, a colonial hangover: Sibal

New Delhi, Jan 16 (PTI) Senior Congress leader Kapil Sibal Wednesday demanded that the sedition law be scrapped as those in power are "manipulating" it.

He also called for a change in the government to save the country.

"Scrap sedition law (section 124A,IPC), a colonial hangover.

"Real sedition is when those in power manipulate institutions, misuse the law, breach peace and security by inciting violence. Punish them in 2019. 'Sarkar badlo Desh bachao' (change government, save country)," Sibal said on Twitter.

Indian SC to hear Zakia Jafri's plea against clean chit to Modi in Guj riots

New Delhi, Jan 15; PTI: The Supreme Court on Tuesday said it would hear a plea by Zakia Jafri, challenging the SIT's clean chit to then Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi in connection with the 2002 Godhra riots, after four weeks.

Zakia, the wife of ex-MP Ehsan Jafri who was one of the 68 killed in Ahmedabad's Gulberg society, has challenged the Gujarat High Court's October 5, 2017 order rejecting her plea against the SIT's decision.

The matter came up for hearing before a bench of Justices A M Khanwilkar and Ajay Rastogi.

India: JK Governor reaches out to Hurriyat, asks cases of 'injustice'

Jammu, Jan 15 (PTI) In a bid to build bridges between Raj Bhawan and Hurriyat Conference, J&K Governor Satya Pal Malik Tuesday reached out to the separatist leaders urging them to apprise him directly of the cases of "atrocity and injustice" to common people that they may come across.

Malik made the offer with an appeal that the Hurriyat Conference leaders should not treat him as "an alien".

"I have a message for Hurriyat that they should not consider me as an alien," Governor Malik told PTI in an interview.

India: 7-yr-old girl raped, murdered

Jaipur, Jan 15 (PTI) A minor girl has been allegedly raped and murdered in the Amber area of the city, police said Tuesday.

The body of the girl, aged around seven years, was recovered from an open area in Chainpura village under Amber Police Station limits on Tuesday, officials said.

"She was allegedly raped and strangulated to death. Different teams are working on the case. Some suspects have been identified. The case will be cracked soon," DCP north Vikas Sharma said.

The body was handed over to family members after postmortem.

Ukrainian court rejects appeal against Russian journalist’s arrest

KIEV, January 14. /TASS/. Ukraine’s Kherson Court of Appeal has rejected an appeal against the arrest of Chief Editor of the RIA Novosti Ukraine news outlet Kirill Vyshinsky until January 27, defense attorney Igor Mokin told TASS.

"The court upheld the decision made by a court of first instance, which arrested Vyshinsky until January 27," he said.
