Indian PM Modi launches Mission LiFE to fight climate change

NEW DELHI, Oct. 20 (Xinhua) -- Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday launched Mission LiFE (Lifestyle For Environment) in the presence of visiting U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, in the country's western state of Gujarat.

Mission LiFE follows a three-pronged strategy. First is encouraging individuals to practice simple yet effective environment-friendly actions in their daily lives. Second is enabling industries and markets to respond swiftly to the changing demand. Third is influencing governments to support sustainable consumption.

US repatriates 307 antiquities valued USD 4 mn stolen, trafficked from India

New York, Oct 19 (PTI) A globe spanning, 15-year investigation has led to the repatriation of 307 antiquities by the US that were stolen and trafficked from India and valued at nearly four million dollars, the majority seized from disgraced art dealer Subhash Kapoor.

Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg announced on Monday the return of 307 antiquities valued at nearly USD 4 million to the people of India.

India: Cong prez polls; Counting of votes begins in Kharge vs Tharoor contest

New Delhi, Oct 19 (PTI) Counting of votes began on Wednesday in the Congress presidential polls in which senior leaders Mallikarjun Kharge and Shashi Tharoor faced-off for the post of AICC chief.

The counting of the votes, which was scheduled to begin at 10 am at the AICC headquarters here, started around 10:20 am.

India: ED attaches over Rs 1,300 cr worth assets in money laundering case against realty group IREO

New Delhi, Oct 16 (PTI) The Enforcement Directorate has attached assets worth more than Rs 1,317 crore of real estate group IREO, its managing director and vice president Lalit Goyal and associated entities as part of a money laundering investigation.

The attached properties include land, commercial spaces, plots, residential houses and bank accounts, the federal agency said in a statement issued on Saturday.

The total value of these attached properties is Rs 1,317.30 crore.

India slips further in Global Hunger Index - behind Nepal, Bangla Desh and Pakistan

Delhi; 16 Oct 2022 (UMMN): According to the latest report, India has slipped to the 107th position in the Global Hunger Index (GHI) 2022 of 121 countries, from its 2021 position of 101st, falling behind its neighbours Nepal, Pakistan and Bangladesh.

In 2021, India ranked 101 out of 116 countries while in 2020 the country was placed at 94th position.

Indian army to conduct military exercise on Western front

Chandigarh, Oct 13 (PTI) Offensive formations of the Indian Army are preparing to take part in a military exercise on the Western front this month, according to a defence release here on Thursday.

It is expected to be one of the biggest exercises in recent times and will be witnessed by the General Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Western Command, and other key officials from Army headquarters, it said.

India: Educators from Nepal visit Delhi government schools

New Delhi, Oct 12 (PTI) A team of 30 educators from Nepal visited Delhi government schools here on Wednesday to understand the initiatives taken by the city government, the Directorate of Education said.

Welcoming them, Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia said such "collaborations are crucial" for the Delhi government to take its schools to "new heights of excellence".

India: SC delivers split verdict in Karnataka hijab ban matter, matter referred to CJI

New Delhi, Oct 13 (PTI) The Supreme Court on Thursday delivered a split verdict on a batch of pleas challenging the Karnataka High Court judgement refusing to lift the ban on hijab in educational institutions of the state.

While Justice Hemant Gupta dismissed the appeals against the high court verdict, Justice Sudhanshu Dhulia allowed them.

Indian Supreme Court refuses to entertain plea to declare cow as national animal

New Delhi, Oct 10 (PTI) The Supreme Court on Monday refused to entertain a plea seeking a direction to the Centre to declare cow as a national animal.

A bench of Justices S K Kaul and Abhay S Oka asked the petitioner what fundamental right was being affected.

"Is this the job of the court? Why do you file such petitions where we are compelled to impose costs? Which fundamental right is violated? Should we throw law to the winds because you come to court? the bench said.

India: SP patriarch Mulayam Singh Yadav dies at 82

Gurugram/New Delhi/Saifai, Oct 10 (PTI) Samajwadi Party founder and three-time Uttar Pradesh chief minister Mulayam Singh Yadav, who spawned the state's most prominent political clan and played a key role on the national stage, died Monday after prolonged illness. He was 82.

The former defence minister was admitted to Gurugram's Medanta Hospital in August and shifted to its Intensive Care Unit on October 2.
