India: Centre's efforts directed at 'reset' of Oppn govts instead of reset of economy: Cong

New Delhi, Sep 2 (PTI) The Congress on Friday alleged that India's growth story is being pushed back due to the Centre's "inept" handling of the economy and said its efforts are only directed towards "reset" of governments led by Opposition parties instead of chalking out a roadmap for the "reset of the economy".

The Opposition party also asked whether the government will now go back on its promises of doubling farmers' income by 2022 and making the country a USD 5 trillion economy.

New Delhi, Sep 4 (PTI) Congress leader Shashi Tharoor, who is contemplating running for the post of party president, on Sunday hailed Rahul Gandhi's "strong speech" at the party's 'Mehengai Par Halla Bol' rally here and noted that huge crowds thronged the Ramlila Maidan for it.

Moody's slashes India's economic growth forecast to 7.7% for 2022

New Delhi, Sep 1 (PTI) Moody's Investors Service on Thursday slashed India's economic growth projection for 2022 to 7.7 per cent, citing dampening of economic momentum in coming quarters on rising interest rates, uneven monsoon, and slowing global growth.

This is a sharp 1.1 percentage points cut from the growth projection of 8.8 per cent for current year made in May by Moody's.

The Indian economy grew 8.3 per cent in 2021 after a 6.7 per cent contraction in 2020, the year when the pandemic struck the country.

India: SC grants interim bail to activist Setalvad

New Delhi, Sep 2 (PTI) The Supreme Court Friday granted interim bail to social activist Teesta Setalvad, arrested on June 25 for allegedly fabricating evidence to frame "innocent people" in the 2002 Gujarat riots cases.

A bench comprising Chief Justice Uday Umesh Lalit and justices S Ravindra Bhat and Sudhanshu Dhulia asked Setalvad to surrender her passport with trial court till the time the Gujarat High Court decides her regular bail plea.

India: Haridwar Dharma Sansad case: SC directs hate speech accused to surrender by Sept 2

New Delhi, Aug 29 (PTI) The Supreme Court on Monday directed Jitendra Narayan Tyagi, an accused in the Haridwar Dharma Sansad case related to alleged inflammatory speeches made against Muslims, to surrender by September 2.

Tyagi, formerly known as Wasim Rizvi, is currently out on medical bail.

India: SC drops contempt case against Prashant Bhushan, Tarun Tejpal

New Delhi, Aug 30 (PTI) The Supreme Court on Tuesday dropped a contempt case against activist-lawyer Prashant Bhushan and journalist Tarun Tejpal filed in 2009 over their remarks against the judiciary.

A bench of Justices Indira Banerjee, Surya Kant and M M Sundresh closed the proceedings after senior advocate Kapil Sibal informed that an apology has been tendered.

Indian Govt may invite financial bids for Shipping Corp sale in March

New Delhi, Aug 30 (PTI) The government is likely to invite financial bids for privatisation of state-owned Shipping Corporation of India (SCI) in the March quarter, an official said.

"The demerger of non-core and land assets of Shipping Corporation is at an advanced stage. The process is expected to be over in about three months' time, after which financial bids will be invited," the official told PTI.

India: 45,026 females committed suicide in 2021, over half were housewives

New Delhi, Aug 30 (PTI) As many as 45,026 females committed suicides during 2021 in the country of whom more than half were housewives.

According to a latest report of the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), a total of 1,64,033 people have committed suicide in 2021 across the country of whom 1,18,979 were males.

India: CBI has found nothing in my locker, Sisodia

New Delhi, Aug 30 (PTI) The CBI found nothing during its search of his locker, Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia said on Tuesday.

A four-member team of the CBI conducted the search at a Punjab National Bank branch in Vasundhara, Ghaziabad, for nearly two hours. Sisodia and his wife wre present at the time.

The CBI was acting under pressure, Sisodia told reporters after the search was over.
