Economist Abhijit Sen dead

New Delhi, Aug 30 (PTI) Economist Abhijit Sen, a former Planning Commission member and one of the country's foremost experts on rural economy, died on Monday night. He was 72.

"He suffered a heart attack around 11 PM. We rushed him to the hospital, but it was all over by the time we got there," said Dr Pronab Sen, his brother.

India: Delhi sees over 110 pc rise in cybercrime cases in 2021

New Delhi, Aug 30 (PTI) The national capital in 2021 witnessed a 111 per cent increase in cybercrime as compared to the previous year, with the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) data citing sexual exploitation to be the motive behind the highest number of such cases.

According to the data for 2021, most of these cases involved online fraud, online harassment and publication of explicit content among others.

The increase comes despite the Delhi Police having created a separate wing for cybercrime as well as a social media centre.

India: CBI officials search AAP Sisodia's bank locker in Ghaziabad

Ghaziabad, Aug 30 (PTI) CBI officials searched Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia's locker here on Tuesday, chaos reigning outside the bank as camera crews jostled with each other and curious crowds gathered to see what was happening.

A team of about five Central Bureau of Investigation officials reached the PNB branch at Sector 4 Vasundhara in Ghaziabad, on the outskirts of the national capital, to execute the search, officials said.

Sisodia was at the bank with his wife.

India: Ayodhya mosque demolition: SC closes contempt proceedings

New Delhi, Aug 30 (PTI) The Supreme Court on Tuesday closed the contempt proceedings, arising out of the demolition of Babri Masjid at Ayodhya in 1992, against the state of Uttar Pradesh and others.

A bench headed by Justice S K Kaul said the issue does not survive now and referred to the November 2019 verdict of a constitution bench.

India: SC to examine constitutional validity of 10 percent quota for EWS

New Delhi, Aug 30 (PTI) The Supreme Court on Tuesday said it would first examine the constitutional validity of the Centre's decision to grant 10 per cent reservation to Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) in admissions and jobs before hearing appeals against a high court verdict which had set aside a local law granting quota to Muslims.

Bhuj (Gujarat), Aug 28 (PTI) Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday said there have been conspiracies to defame Gujarat and stop investments to his home state.

Modi was addressing a rally after inaugurating and laying the foundation stone of development works in Bhuj district ahead of Gujarat elections slated later this year.

There were conspiracies to defame Gujarat in the country and the world. Repeated attempts were made to stop investment coming to the state, but the state chose a new path of progress, Modi said.

India: SC issues notice to Gujarat govt on activist Teesta Setalvad's bail plea

New Delhi, Aug 22 (PTI) The Supreme Court on Monday sought the Gujarat government's response on social activist Teesta Setalvad's bail plea and posted the matter for hearing on August 25.

Setalvad was arrested in June for allegedly fabricating evidence to frame "innocent people" in the 2002 Gujarat riot cases.

A bench headed by Justice U U Lalit issued notice to the state on her plea.

On August 3, the Gujarat High Court issued notice to the state government on the plea and had fixed the matter for hearing on September 19.
