India: Priyanka Gandhi writes to UP CM, seeks waiver of power bills of farmers

New Delhi, May 13 (PTI) Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Wednesday wrote to UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, seeking zero interest on home loans availed by the poor and middle class and also waiver of power bills of farmers for four months.

In a letter to the UP chief minister, she also sought a slew of relief measures including waivers on bank loans and power bills of small and medium industries in the state, which are considered the backbone of the economy.

Indian PM announces special economic package

New Delhi, May 12 (PTI) Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced a special economic package, and said the recent decisions by the government, the decisions by the RBI combined with Tuesday's financial package announcement come to about Rs 20 lakh crore - nearly 10 percent of India's GDP.

There is unprecedented crisis but India will neither get tired nor give up the fight against coronavirus, Modi said, and asserted that "we have to protect ourselves and move ahead as well".

India: COVID-19 positive Army jawan commits suicide

New Delhi, May 12 (PTI) An Army jawan infected with coronavirus was on Tuesday found hanging from a tree at the premises of a hospital here where he was being treated, police said.

The 31-year-old jawan was suffering from lung cancer. He was being treated at the military-run Base Hospital here.

His sample was taken for COVID-19 test and the results came as positive, they said.

The jawan, a native of Maharashtra, was posted at Itarana Cantt in Alwar district of Rajasthan, police said.

India: FIR against Ex-MP Pappu Yadav for defying lockdown

New Delhi, May 12 (PTI) The Delhi Police has registered an FIR against former MP from Bihar Pappu Yadav for allegedly violating the lockdown orders, officials said on Monday.

Yadav went to meet migrant workers from Bihar in Okhla Mandi area here when they were protesting that they should be sent to their home state, they said.

"Yadav came to the place and assured the migrants that he will request the government and make some arrangement for them at the earliest," a senior police officer said.

India: CAPFs canteens to sell only indigenous products from June 1

India: Industrial output falls a record 16.7 pc in March

New Delhi, May 12 (PTI) India's industrial production contracted by a record 16.7 per cent in March, on account of poor show by mining, manufacturing and electricity sectors mainly due to the nationwide lockdown, government data showed on Tuesday.

The government had imposed the lockdown to contain COVID-19 from March 25.

The 16.7 per cent fall in factory output is the sharpest since April 2012, based on the new series of IIP data with base year 2011-12.

The Index of Industrial Production (IIP) had grown by 2.7 per cent in March, 2019.

India: SC orders setting up of panel to consider pleas for internet in J-K

New Delhi, May 11 (PTI) The Supreme Court Monday ordered setting up of a high-powered committee headed by MHA Secretary to consider pleas seeking restoration of 4G internet services in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir.

A bench comprising Justices N V Ramana, Justices R Subhash Reddy and B R Gavai said the committee would also include the Chief Secretary of the UT and the secretary of ministry of communications to look into the demands by petitioners seeking restoration of 4G internet speed there.
