India: PM Modi to travel to Bangladesh on March 17

New Delhi, Mar 6 (PTI) Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to travel to Dhaka on March 17 in the midst of rising concerns in Bangladesh over India's new citizenship law and the proposed NRC.

Modi is visiting Dhaka at the invitation of his Bangladeshi counterpart Sheikh Hasina to attend the centenary celebrations of Bangladesh founder Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

India: EC nod to JVM(P) merger with BJP

New Delhi, Mar 7 (PTI) The Election Commission has recognised the merger of Jharkhand Vikas Morcha (Prajatantrik) with the Bharatiya Janata Party.

In its order issued on Friday, following the merger, JVM(P) has ceased to exist as a separate political party in Jharkhand. Hence, it is removed from the list of political parties maintained by the commission.

Indian Govt not serious on probe into Delhi riots: Yechury

Ludhiana, Mar 5 (PTI) CPI(M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury on Thursday accused the BJP-led Union government of not being serious on any probe into riots in Delhi.

The Central government is not serious about inquiry into Delhi riots which resulted in huge loss of human lives and public property. The administration and police appeared to be mere spectators, Yechury said here.

India: Delhi hospital hosts wedding of woman displaced in riots

New Delhi, Mar 5 (PTI) The Al-Hind Hospital in Mustafabad where those injured in the northeast Delhi violence are undergoing treatment turned into a marriage hall as 19-year-old Rukhsar got married in a sombre ceremony.

Rukhsar's wedding was earlier scheduled to take place on Tuesday. However, it was called off last minute as all that her family had bought for the wedding -- clothes, jewellery etc -- was looted in the riots that broke out over a week ago.

India: Lok Sabha adjourned amid Opposition protests over Delhi violence

New Delhi, Mar 6 (PTI) Proceedings of Lok Sabha were adjourned for the day amid continued protests by the Opposition over the Delhi violence and other issues.

The House was adjourned after the passage of two Bills -- the Mineral Laws (Amendment) Bill and the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (Second Amendment) Bill.

India: Rupee dives 46 paise to 73.79 against USD

Mumbai, Mar 6 (PTI) The Indian rupee resumed its downward journey after a day's hiatus on Friday, plummeting by 46 paise to 73.79 (provisional) against the US dollar as coronavirus-panicked investors kept assessing deteriorating financial markets.

At the interbank foreign exchange, the domestic currency started the session with a massive plunge at 73.94 to the US dollar. It went on to hit a day's low of 74.08 before staging a recovery. The rupee finally settled with a loss of 46 paise at 73.79 a dollar.

India: 7 Cong MPs suspended from Lok Sabha, Adhir Ranjan says it's 'dictatorial'

New Delhi, Mar 5 (PTI) The Congress on Thursday alleged that the suspension of its seven members from Lok Sabha for the entire session was a "dictatorial decision" by the government aimed at weakening the Opposition's voice ahead of a debate over Delhi riots.

Lok Sabha passed a motion suspending seven Congress members for the remaining period of the Budget session for their "gross misconduct" after they snatched papers from the Speaker's table and "utter disregard" for House rules.

India: Govt takes action against 8,000 social media links

New Delhi, Mar 4 (PTI) The government on Wednesday said it has taken action against over 8,000 links on social media in 2018 and 2019 under the Information Technology Act, 2000.

The action was taken under Section 69A of the Act that empowers the government to block any information generated, transmitted, received, stored or hosted in any computer resource in the interest of sovereignty and integrity of India, defence of India, security of the state, friendly relations with foreign states or public order or for preventing incitement to the commission of any cognisable offence.

India: Cong slams govt over UN rights chief moving SC on CAA

New Delhi, Mar 3 (PTI) The Congress on Tuesday attacked the government over the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights filing an application in the Supreme Court on the CAA, with senior leader Ahmed Patel saying though it is "unwarranted interference" the Modi dispensation is to be blamed for the "mess".
