India: Justice Bobde takes oath as 47th CJI

New Delhi, Nov 18 (PTI) Justice Sharad Arvind Bobde, who was part of the historic Ayodhya verdict earlier this month, was on Monday administered oath as the 47th Chief Justice of India by President Ram Nath Kovind and started holding court at 11:30 am.

Bobde, 63, succeeds Justice Ranjan Gogoi who demitted office on Sunday.

India: Winter Session starts on stormy note; Opposition uproar in LS

New Delhi, Nov 18 (PTI) The Winter Session of Lok Sabha on Monday began on a stormy note, with protests by the Congress and other Opposition members over various issues.

Soon after oath-taking of four members and paying condolences to members of Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha who died in recent months, Opposition members sought to raise various issues.

Within minutes of commencement of the Question Hour, around 30 members from the Congress trooped into the Well, shouting slogans and demanding that the government stop attacking the Opposition as well as foisting false cases.

India: Sharad Yadav to campaign for opposition alliance in Jharkhand

Ranchi, Nov 16 (PTI) Former MP Sharad Yadav on Saturday said he will campaign for the opposition alliance in the coming Jharkhand assembly elections.

Yadav who met jailed RJD supremo Lalu Prasad at the Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences here, said, "I will come on November 22 or 23 to campaign for the opposition alliance candidates."

India: Justice Ranjan Gogoi retires as CJI

New Delhi, Nov 17 (PTI) Justice Ranjan Gogoi, the first person from northeast to reach the top of judiciary and credited for bringing the curtains down on the decades old politically and religiously sensitive Ayodhya land dispute, retired as the chief justice of India on Sunday.

Justice Gogoi's tenure as judge and as CJI was marked by some controversies and personal allegations but that never came in his way of his judicial work that was reflected in the last few days when benches headed by him delivered some path-breaking judgements.

India: Winter session of Parliament from Monday; govt set to push Citizenship bill

New Delhi, Nov 17 (PTI) The situation in Jammu and Kashmir, economic slowdown, unemployment and the government's plan to bring the Citizenship bill are some of the issues which are likely to emerge as flashpoints between the opposition and treasury benches in the Winter session of Parliament beginning Monday.

Besides the passage of the Citizenship (amendment) bill, the government also plans to convert two crucial ordinances into law during the session.

Indian Govt mulls raising insurance cover on bank deposits to above Rs 1 lakh: FM

New Delhi, Nov 15 (PTI) Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharman on Friday said the government will bring legislations on raising insurance cover on bank deposits from the current Rs 1 lakh and regulating multi-state cooperative banks.

These legislations will be brought during the Winter Session of Parliament starting coming Monday, the minister told reporters here.

India: Lawyers in Delhi's district courts call off strike

New Delhi, Nov 15 (PTI) Lawyers in all the six district courts in Delhi called off their strike on Friday, which was underway since November 4 after a clash between advocates and police at the Tis Hazari court.

The Coordination Committee of All District Courts Bar Associations took the decision in a meeting of the office bearers after the Delhi High Court order directed the lawyers to resolve the matter.

India: Exports decline 1.11pc in Oct

New Delhi, Nov 15 (PTI) India's exports contracted for the third month in a row in October by 1.11 per cent to USD 26.38 billion mainly on account of a significant dip in shipments of petroleum, carpet, leather products, rice and tea.

Imports too declined by 16.31 per cent -- the steepest fall in more than three years -- to USD 37.39 billion in October, narrowing the trade deficit to USD 11 billion, according to the government data released on Friday.
