Pavan Kapoor appointed as India's Ambassador to UAE

New Delhi, Aug 28 (PTI) Senior diplomat Pavan Kapoor has been appointed as India's Ambassador to the United Arab Emirates, the Ministry of External Affairs announced Tuesday.

Kapoor, a 1990-batch Indian Foreign Service officer, will replace Navdeep Suri as India's Ambassador to the UAE.

He is expected to take up the assignment shortly, the MEA said in a statement.

India: plea to remove restrictions on journalists; SC issues notices to Centre

New Delhi, Aug 28; GANASHAKTI: The Supreme Court Wednesday asked the Centre and the Jammu and Kashmir administration to reply to the pleas seeking removal of several regressive restrictions in the state, including the communications blockade, that are hampering the functioning of the media after the abrogation of Article 370.

The apex court issued notices on the two petitions, filed by Anuradha Bhasin, Executive Editor of Kashmir Times and Congress activist Tehseen Poonawalla.

Delhi: Student protest pre-planned attack by ABVP - student wing of BJP

New Delhi; 27 Aug 2019; GANASHAKTI: Condemning the attack, several students and teachers bodies including Bhagat Singh Chatra Ekta Manch (BSCEM), Progressive Democratic Students’ Federation (PDSF), All India Students’ Association, Pinjra Tod and SFI held a protest gathering today August 26 at Delhi University’s Arts Faculty.

During the protest, student activists alleged that it was a pre-planned attack and the police is delaying to take appropriate action against the perpetrators of the incident.

India: Sitaram Yechury permitted by SC to visit J-K

New Delhi, Aug 28 (PTI) After getting a green signal from the Supreme Court, CPI(M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury will visit Jammu and Kashmir on Thursday to meet his party colleague and former MLA Mohammed Yusuf Tarigami.

Yechury said he will do "whatever needs to be done" on the basis of his visit.

India: Govt constitutes GoM on Jammu and Kashmir

New Delhi, Aug 28 (PTI) The government on Wednesday constituted a Group of Ministers (GoM) to look into development, economic and social issues in the Union Territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh that will come into existence on October 31.

Government sources said Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad, Social Justice and Empowerment Minister Thawar Chand Gehlot, Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar, Minister for the PMO Jitendra Singh and Petroleum Minister Dharmendra Pradhan are part of the group.

India: Feroz Shah Kotla to be renamed as Arun Jaitley Stadium

New Delhi, Aug 27 (PTI) The Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA) on Tuesday decided to rechristen Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium as Arun Jaitley Stadium in the memory of its former president who passed away on Saturday.

The renaming will take place on September 12 at a function where a stand at the Kotla will be named after India captain Virat Kohli as announced earlier.

India: Dalit (untouchable) activists to sit on indefinite dharna from Aug 30

New Delhi, Aug 27 (PTI) Dalit activists on Tuesday said they will sit on an indefinite dharna from August 30 at Jantar Mantar to demand rebuilding of a Ravidas temple at its original place in south Delhi's Tughlakabad area.

A Ravidas temple was demolished by the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) on August 10 on the directions of the Supreme Court, following which a protest by Dalits against the demolition turned violent on August 21.

India: SC to examine challenges to abrogation of Art 370; refers to 5-judge bench

New Delhi, Aug 28 (PTI) The Supreme Court on Wednesday referred a batch of petitions challenging the changes brought in the constitutional status of Jammu and Kashmir by abrogating Article 370 to a five-judge Constitution bench.

The apex court issued notices to the Centre and the Jammu and Kashmir administration on a batch of pleas challenging the presidential order by which Article 370 of the Constitution was abrogated.

Delhi HC agrees to hear a fresh plea on Uniform Civil Code

New Delhi, Aug 26 (PTI) The Delhi High Court Monday agreed to hear on Tuesday a PIL seeking direction to the Centre to constitute a judicial commission or a high level expert committee to draft a Uniform Civil Code (UCC) for securing gender justice, equality and dignity of women.

The plea was mentioned before a bench a Chief Justice D N Patel and Justice C Hari Shankar which tagged it for hearing along with a similar pending petition.
