UK leader under pressure to take no-deal off table

LONDON (AP) — Prime Minister Theresa May is facing a revolt from members of her own government as lawmakers try to prevent her from taking Britain out of the European Union in a month’s time without a divorce deal.

Three junior government ministers write in Tuesday’s Daily Mail that they will vote with lawmakers from all parties to stop a no-deal departure unless May agrees to delay Brexit and guarantee “we are not swept over the precipice on March 29.”

Huawei exec pokes fun at US spying, Snowden at tech show

BARCELONA, Spain (AP) — A top executive at Chinese tech supplier Huawei poked fun at U.S. intelligence on Tuesday as he sought to reassure people attending the world’s biggest mobile industry fair that the company’s technology is secure.

Guo Ping, Huawei’s rotating chairman, used his keynote speech at MWC Barcelona to fight back against U.S. allegations that the company’s technology poses a national security risk to next-generation mobile networks.

Trial of German gunmaker Sig Sauer 'illegal weapons shipments' begins

26 Feb 2019; DW: The trial of German arms producer Sig Sauer began at the Kiel District Court in northern Germany on Monday. Three executives are accused of being involved with the delivery of guns worth €270 million ($306 million) to Colombia without the necessary authorizations.

The accused face up to five years in prison if convicted and the prosecution is also demanding the company pay a €12-million fine.

Brexit: Labour willing to back new Brexit referendum

26 Feb 2019; DW: On Monday evening, the Labour Party said it would back a public vote if parliament rejected the party's alternative plan for leaving the bloc. 

"This week Labour will put its alternative plan for a vote in the House of Commons," Brexit spokesman Keir Starmer said on Twitter. "If Parliament rejects our plan, then Labour will deliver on the promise we made at our annual conference and support a public vote."

UAE’s first astronaut may fly to ISS September 25

MOSCOW, February 25. /TASS/. The preliminary date set for the first space flight by a United Arab Emirates astronaut has been set for September 25, the chief of the Gagarin Space Training Center, Pavel Vlasov, has told TASS.

"At this point, yes (it’s September 25). This agreement is to be confirmed by the Russian side later today in the form of an authorized program for flights to the ISS this year," Vlasov said when asked if it was true the UAE’s first astronaut would be put in space on September 25.

EU calls for peaceful resolution of Venezuelan crisis

BRUSSELS, February 25. /TASS/. The European Union stands for resolving the Venezuelan crisis peacefully, EU Spokesperson for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Maja Kocijancic said at a press conference in Brussels on Monday.

"We need a peaceful political and democratic and Venezuelan-owned resolution of this crisis. This obviously excludes the use of force," she said.

On February 28, the EU will discuss preparations for a new ministerial meeting of the Contact Group on Venezuela, Kocijancic noted, adding that no date for the meeting had been determined so far.

International Space Station’s orbit raised by 1.6 km

MOSCOW, February 26. /TASS/. Specialists of the Russian Mission Control Center have adjusted the International Space Station’s orbit, raising it to the medium altitude of 408.5 km, a spokesman for the Central Research Institute of Machine-Building (TsNIImash) said on Tuesday.

"The orbit adjustment was performed as scheduled. As a result of the maneuver the medium altitude of the space station’s orbit was raised to 408.5 km," the spokesman said.

Britain, U.S. reach deal over post-Brexit trading and clearing of derivatives

LONDON, Feb. 25 (Xinhua) -- The British and United States authorities announced an agreement Monday on the continuity of derivatives trading and clearing after Brexit.

The deal was struck between, on the one hand, the UK's main financial markets regulators the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) and the Bank of England's (BoE) Prudential Regulation Authority (PRA) and on the other hand the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC).
