Missiles hit Ukrainian city, alarms elsewhere keep up fear

KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — A new round of missile attacks struck the southern Ukrainian city of Zaporizhzhia Tuesday, as the death toll from the previous day’s widespread Russian missile barrage across Ukraine rose to 19.

Missiles struck a school, a medical facility and residential buildings in Zaporizhzhia, city council secretary Anatoliy Kurtev said. The State Emergency Service said 12 S-300 missiles slammed into public facilities, setting off a large fire in the area. One person was killed.

Kremlin war hawks demand more devastating strikes on Ukraine

TALLINN, Estonia (AP) — Moscow’s barrage of missile strikes on cities all across Ukraine has elicited celebratory comments from Russian officials and pro-Kremlin pundits, who in recent weeks have actively criticized the Russian military for a series of embarrassing setbacks on the battlefield.

Russia: Kadyrov says he is satisfied with special military operation 100%

GROZNY, October 10. /TASS/: The head of Chechnya, Ramzan Kadyrov, has said that he is now absolutely satisfied with the conduct of the special operation.

"Now I am one hundred percent satisfied with the way the special military operation is being conducted," he wrote on his Telegram channel on Monday.

"We warned you, Zelensky, that Russia has not really started yet. Stop complaining like a scum. You better run away, before you get hit. Run. Run, Zelensky, run without looking back at the West," Kadyrov added.

NATO mulling options to carry out aggression against Minsk, Belarusian president says

MINSK, October 10. /TASS/: The leader of NATO and some European countries are considering options to carry out aggression against Belarus, up to conducting a nuclear attack, Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko said at a meeting on security issues on Monday.

Beneficiary of Nord Stream sabotage well-known, Russia not allowed to investigate — Putin

MOSCOW, October 10. /TASS/: While Russia is not allowed to investigate the sabotage at the Nord Stream pipeline, but the beneficiary is already known, Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Monday at a meeting with permanent members of the Russian Security Council.

"As you know, Russian representatives are not allowed to investigate the causes of explosions and destruction of international gas transmission systems passing through the bottom of the Baltic Sea, but we all know the ultimate beneficiary of this crime," Putin said.

Russia: Kremlin lauds efficient work to eliminate consequences of terror attack on Crimean Bridge

MOSCOW, October 10. /TASS/: All the services involved in eliminating the consequences of a terror attack on the Crimean Bridge, including the Emergencies Ministry, worked promptly and efficiently, Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Monday.

On Saturday morning, a truck exploded on the Crimean Bridge, collapsing two eastbound parts of its road section and subsequently setting ablaze a train of fuel tanks on a separate, adjacent rail portion of the bridge. As a result of the blast, three people were killed.

Germany's cybersecurity chief faces dismissal, reports say

BERLIN, Oct 10 (Reuters) - German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser wants to dismiss the country's cybersecurity chief due to possible contacts with people involved with Russian security services, German media reported late on Sunday, citing government sources.

Arne Schoenbohm, president of the BSI federal information security agency, could have had such contacts through the Cyber Security Council of Germany, various outlets reported.

Switzerland: Red Cross pauses Ukraine field work for security reasons

GENEVA, Oct 10 (Reuters) - The International Committee of the Red Cross and at least one other aid group paused their field work in Ukraine for security reasons on Monday after Russia fired missiles at cities across Ukraine.

Russia hit sites across the country, striking the capital Kyiv with an intensity not seen since Russian forces sought to capture the capital early in the more than seven-month war.

Moscow says the strikes were against energy, command and communication targets in retaliation for what it describes as terrorist attacks. 

Putin may meet Erdogan to discuss idea of Russia-West talks, Kremlin says

Oct 10 (Reuters) - President Vladimir Putin may meet Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan this week to discuss a Turkish proposal to host talks between Russia and the West on Ukraine, the Kremlin said on Monday.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters that Russia had not received any signals about the prospect of negotiations with the West in Turkey, but did not rule out that Putin could discuss this with Erdogan.

Both Putin and Erdogan are expected to visit Kazakhstan this week.

Germany to deliver air defence system to Ukraine within days -defence ministry

BERLIN, Oct 10 (Reuters) - Germany will deliver the first of four IRIS-T SLM air defence systems to Ukraine within days, German Defence Minister Christine Lambrecht said on Monday.

"The renewed missile fire on Kyiv and the many other cities show how important it is to supply Ukraine with air defence systems quickly," Lambrecht said in a statement.

"Russia's attacks with missiles and drones terrorize the civilian population in particular. That is why we are now providing support especially with air defence weapons."
