Guatemala blasts Trump over coronavirus-infected migrant deportations

GUATEMALA CITY, May 22 (NNN-AGENCIES) — Guatemala blasted US President Donald Trump over US deportations of migrants infected with coronavirus.

President Alejandro Giammattei said the deportations had saturated quarantine centers in Guatemala and heaped pressure on the Central American country’s weak health system.

“Guatemala is an ally to the United States, the United States is not an ally to Guatemala,” he told the Atlantic Council, a Washington-based international affairs think tank.

Lebanon sees highest single-day jump in corona cases

BEIRUT, May 22 (NNN-AGENCIES) — Lebanon’s Health Ministry reported 63 new cases of the coronavirus on Thursday, the largest single-day increase since the outbreak of the pandemic.

Lebanon has seen an increase in cases in recent weeks after it began easing lockdown measures as part of a gradual re-opening of its crisis-hit economy. Many of the new cases are the result of Lebanese expatriates returning home, Information Minister Manal Abdel Samad.

The country of about 6 million has recorded 1,024 cases and 26 deaths, according to the Health Ministry.

Chechnya’s Ramzan Kadyrov ‘flown to Moscow Hospital’ for suspected corona infection

MOSCOW, May 22 (NNN-AGENCIES) — Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov has been taken to hospital with suspected coronavirus, Russian media report.

He was flown to Moscow on Wednesday for treatment after developing flu-like symptoms, said Interfax news agency quoting a source.

“He’s in hospital in Moscow,” another source told the Ria Novosti agency.

The authoritarian leader – who previously fought against Moscow as a Chechen nationalist – is now a key ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Italy's corona death toll could be 19,000 higher than reported

ROME, May 22 (NNN-AGENCIES) — Italy’s death toll from the novel coronavirus in March and April could be nearly 19,000 higher than the official figure of 32,000, the national social security agency said.

The Istituto Nazionale della Previdenza Sociale (INPS), the largest social security and welfare institute in Italy, said in a new study that the official death figures were not “reliable”.

France’s daily toll dips to 83, no sign of second wave

PARIS, May 22 (NNN-AGENCIES) — The number of coronavirus deaths registered in France over the last 24 hours dipped to 83 on Thursday, as a top doctor said he was not seeing a second wave of infections despite the country easing its lockdown.

The latest deaths in hospitals and nursing homes brought France’s total toll from the pandemic to 28,215, the health ministry said in a statement.

Covid-19: Infections top 5 million worldwide

PARIS, May 22 (NNN-AGENCIES) — Global infections from the novel coronavirus passed five million as the pandemic played out unevenly across the planet, with China eager to declare a victory, Europe tentatively emerging from its shell and deaths still rising in hotspots in Latin America.

The grim milestone comes after known cases of COVID-19 doubled in just one month, with the death toll now topping 328,000 worldwide.

India: CRPF's ASI succumbs to coronavirus in Delhi

New Delhi, May 21 (PTI) A 50-year-old Assistant Sub-Inspector of the Central Reserve Police Force has succumbed to COVID-19 here, officials said on Thursday.

This is the second death linked to the pandemic in the country's largest paramilitary force, which has 3.25 lakh personnel, and the seventh among the five paramilitary or Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) of the CRPF, BSF, CISF, ITBP and SSB.

The officials said ASI Panchdev Ram breathed his last on Wednesday at the Lady Hardinge Medical College in Delhi.

Pakistan conducts highest number of coronavirus tests over 24-hour

Islamabad, May 21 (PTI) Pakistan conducted the highest number of tests per day during the last 24 hours as the coronavirus cases crossed 48,000-mark on Thursday, the health ministry said.

Pakistan recorded 2,193 new cases, taking the total number of infections to 48,091. The death toll stands at 1,017 with 32 new fatalities.

As many as 15,346 coronavirus tests, the highest in a single day, were conducted in the last 24 hours, health officials said.

The authorities have conducted 429,600 tests so far.

India: Barabanki emerges as COVID-19 hotspot; 95 new cases

Barabanki (UP) May 21 (PTI) Uttar Pradesh's Barabanki district has emerged as the new COVID-19 hotspot as 95 new cases of the virus were reported in a single day, half of them migrant workers returning from other states.

District Magistrate, Barabanki, Aadarsh Kumar, said on Wednesday that of the 245 samples sent for testing on May 15-16, 95 have been found positive.

Among those who tested positive, 49 are migrants who had recently returned from other states, the DM said, adding that all have been admitted to hospital as per the protocol.

Malaysia: Prices of goods monitored since MCO began – Minister

KAJANG, May 20 (NNN-BERNAMA) — Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Minister Datuk Alexander Nanta Linggi said the government has always been sensitive to consumer complaints and has been monitoring the price of goods from the start of the Movement Control Order (MCO).

He said this when commenting on complaints that the government has been slow in controlling the prices of essential goods ahead of Aidilfitri.
