India: Two doctors among 14 test coronavirus positive in Bhopal

Bhopal, Apr 10 (PTI) Fourteen more persons, including two women doctors, tested positive for coronavirus in Bhopal on Friday, taking the number of COVID-19 patients in the state capital to 112 and overall tally in Madhya Pradesh to 440, a health official said.

Test reports of these persons came on Friday morning and they were found to be infected with the viral disease, he said.

Efforts were on to quarantine them and start their treatment, the official said.

Kenyan Dep Governor charged with wilfully spreading coronavirus

NAIROBI, April 10 (NNN-AGENCIES) — A Kenyan court charged a senior regional government official with wilfully spreading the novel coronavirus by going out in public without taking precautions, an accusation he denied.

Kenya, which has 179 confirmed cases and six deaths from the coronavirus, has banned all public gatherings and limited the number of mourners at funerals.

Global corona death toll passes 94,000, but some signs of hope

Canada expects deaths to soar; job losses hit 1 million

OTTAWA, April 10 (NNN-AGENCIES) — Canada’s coronavirus death toll is set to soar from the current 435 to as high as 22,000 by the end of the pandemic, health officials said, while the economy lost a record 1 million jobs last month.

Officials outlined the two most likely scenarios, showing that between 11,000 and 22,000 people would die. The total number of positive diagnoses of COVID-19, the respiratory illness caused by the novel coronavirus, ranged from 934,000 to 1.9 million.

Trump announces to put a hold on WHO funding

India: Delhi Police head constable tests positive for COVID-19

New Delhi, Apr 8 (PTI) A 44-year-old Delhi Police head constable tested positive for coronavirus in Rohini area on Wednesday, officials said.

According to police, they received information around 3.40 pm that one head constable in Rohini's Sector-16 has tested positive for COVID-19.

Greek health workers demonstrate over coronavirus conditions

ATHENS, April 9 (NNN-AGENCIES) — Hundreds of Greek healthcare workers demonstrated against working conditions and manpower and equipment shortages in public hospitals fighting the coronavirus pandemic.

The Tuesday demonstrations coincided with World Health Day, according to the federation of hospital personnel.

“You only saw us when we covered our faces,” proclaimed a poster printed by hospital trade unions, bearing a picture of doctors wearing anti-coronavirus masks.

UN delivers 90 tons of COVID-19 aid to Venezuela

CARACAS, April 9 (NNN-AGENCIES) — A plane carrying 90 tons of UN health, water and sanitation aid arrived in Venezuela on Wednesday to help the cash-strapped country fight the coronavirus pandemic.

The shipment includes 28,000 Personal Protective Equipment kits for health workers, oxygen concentrators, pediatric beds, water quality control products and hygiene kits, the UN said.

“This is the first United Nations humanitarian shipment in support of the Venezuela COVID-19 outbreak,” said Peter Grohmann, the UN’s humanitarian coordinator for Venezuela.

COVID-19 reaches indigenous Yanomami people in Amazon

BRASILIA, April 9 (NNN-AGENCIES) — Brazil said a first case of COVID-19 had been detected among the Yanomami people, an Amazon indigenous group known for its remoteness and its vulnerability to foreign diseases.

“Today we confirmed a case (of the virus) among the Yanomami, which is very worrying,” Health Minister Luiz Henrique Mandetta told a news conference.

“We have to be triply cautious with (indigenous) communities, especially the ones that have very little contact with the outside world.”

Italy closes ports to migrant ships because of COVID-19

ROME, April 9 (NNN-AGENCIES) — Italian ports cannot be considered safe because of the coronavirus epidemic and will not let charity migrant boats dock, the government has ruled.

The decision was taken after a ship operated by the German non-governmental group Sea-Eye picked up some 150 people off Libya and headed towards Italy.

“For the entire duration of the national health emergency caused by the spread of the COVID-19 virus, Italian ports cannot guarantee the requisites needed to be classified and defined as a place of safety,” the decree said.
