India: 78,357 new cases in a day take India's COVID-19 tally past 3,700,000

New Delhi, Sep 2 (PTI) India's COVID-19 tally of cases galloped past 37 lakh on Wednesday with 78,357 new instances of the disease reported in a day, while the number of recoveries crossed 29 lakh pushing the recovery rate to 76.98 per cent, the Union health ministry data showed.

The death toll climbed to 66,333 with 1,045 more fatalities reported in 24 hours. India has so far reported 37,69,523 cases of the viral disease, according to the data updated at 8 am.

India leads global rise in new weekly COVID-19 cases: WHO

GENEVA (Reuters) - India reported the most new COVID-19 cases of any country in the past week, its nearly half a million fresh infections pushing the global tally up by 1 percent, the World Health Organization (WHO) said on Tuesday.

Overall global new deaths in the past seven days fell by 3% compared to the previous week, the WHO reported, adding that overall new infections around the world rose by 1.8 million.

India: UP minister Mohsin Raza tests COVID-19 positive

Lucknow, Aug 31 (PTI) Uttar Pradesh Minister Mohsin Raza on Monday said he has tested positive for COVID-19 and asked everyone who had come in contact with him in the last few days to quarantine themselves.

Raza, who is the Minister of State for Minority Welfare, Muslim Waqf and Haj in Uttar Pradesh, said on the advice of doctors, he has quarantined himself at his residence.

"In the past, some staff attached to me had tested positive for COVID-19. After having symptoms of COVID-19, I underwent test on Monday. I have tested positive for COVID-19.

Victoria's health department reported 41 deaths from COVID-19 and 73 new infections in the latest 24-hour period.

India: Shiv Sena hits out at BJP over demand to reopen temples

Mumbai, Aug 31 (PTI) The Shiv Sena on Monday targeted the BJP for seeking reopening of temples in Maharashtra amid the COVID-19 crisis, and asked whether the NDA constituent will take responsibility if there is an "explosion" of coronavirus cases again.

The opposition BJP in Maharashtra last week staged protests outside temples in parts of the state, demanding reopening of the places of worship.

India: Amit Shah discharged from AIIMS

New Delhi, Aug 31 (PTI) Union Home Minister Amit Shah, who was admitted to the AIIMS here for post-COVID care, was discharged on Monday morning, the hospital said.

Shah, 55, had undergone treatment at the Medanta Hospital as he tested positive for the novel coronavirus and was discharged after he tested negative. He was later admitted to the AIIMS on August 18 following complaints of fatigue and body ache.

India: In-charge of COVID hospital in UP's Deoria succumbs to virus

Deoria (UP), Aug 31 (PTI) A doctor in-charge of a COVID-19 facility here died after contracting the virus, officials said on Monday.

Chief Medical Officer, Dr Alok Pandey, said that Dr Rajiv Ranjan had tested positive for coronavirus on August 19 and was admitted to the Gorakhpur Medical College where he died late on Sunday.

Dr Ranjan, who was posted at the Community Health Centre in Rudrapur, was made in-charge of the COVID-19 hospital in March.

India sets global record with single-day rise in coronavirus cases

NEW DELHI (Reuters) - India on Sunday reported the biggest single-day jump in coronavirus infections of any nation in the COVID-19 pandemic, as the epicentre shifts to the south Asian giant.

India’s 78,761 cases exceeded the 77,299 recorded in the United States on July 16, a Reuters tally of official data showed.

The world’s second-most populous nation is, with 3.54 million cases, the third-hardest hit by the pandemic, following the United States and Brazil, but its daily tallies have exceeded those of the other two countries for almost two weeks.

Malaysia extends ban on foreign tourists

Kuala Lumpur, Aug 29 (AP/PTI) Malaysia has extended its pandemic movement restrictions including a ban on foreign tourists until the end of the year.

Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin said in a televised address late Friday that global cases have been rising and the country has seen sporadic virus clusters even though the situation was under control.

Malaysia has recorded more than 9,000 cases with 125 deaths.
