USA: 136 congressmen, 30 senators seek reversal of Trump admin's decision on international students

Washington, Jul 10 (PTI) A group of 136 US Democratic congressmen and 30 senators, including Indian-origin Kamala Harris, has urged the Trump administration to reverse its "cruel" order that bars international students from staying in the country if they do not have in-person classes to attend.

India: 132 inmates of Nagpur jail test positive for coronavirus

Nagpur, July 9 (PTI) 132 inmates tested positive for coronavirus in rapid antigen tests conducted at Nagpur Central Prison here on Thursday, taking the number of virus infections in the jail to 219, a senior official said.

Jail Superintendent Anup Kumre told PTI that these 132prisoners will be shifted to hospitals on Friday.

Of 219 persons, 42 tested positive in swab sample tests and remaining in rapid antigen tests.

The jail houses 1,800 inmates while 265 police personnel are attached to it.

Trump's withdrawal of U.S. from WHO "act of true senselessness": Nancy Pelosi

WASHINGTON, July 9 (Xinhua) -- U.S. President Donald Trump's official withdrawal of the country from the World Health Organization (WHO) is "an act of true senselessness," U.S. House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi said on Twitter.

Trump made the decision at a time when "the WHO coordinates the global fight against COVID-19," Pelosi wrote on Wednesday. "With millions of lives at risk, the President is crippling the international effort to defeat the virus."

Australia: Queensland locks out people from virus spots in Victoria

Canberra, Jul 9 (AP/PTI) An Australian state has closed its doors to people fleeing a second lockdown in Australia's second-largest city.

Queensland Health Minister Steven Miles said on Thursday that a number of people were willing to pay for their own 14-day hotel quarantine to be allowed to escape Melbourne and other parts of Victoria state that began a six-week shutdown Wednesday because of an expanding coronavirus outbreak.

The Haj House is located in the Sarojini Nagar area of Lucknow. Haj pilgrims stay here before embarking on their journey.

India: TN Electricity Minister tests positive for coronavirus

Chennai, Jul 8 (PTI) Electricity Minister and AIADMK leader, P Thangamani has tested positive for coronavirus, a party spokespersonsaid here on Wednesday.

The Minister was admitted to a private hospital for treatment today following the test result, he said.

Thangamani, who holds the portfolios of power, prohibition and excise is also a senior AIADMK leader and party heavyweight in western Tamil Nadu.

He is the second Minister to test positive after Higher EducationMinister K P Anbalagan.

UK: New Study Warns Of Brain Damages Linked To COVID-19

LONDON, July 8 (NNN-AGENCIES) – A new study found that infection with COVID-19 can lead to brain damages, including delirium and nerve damage.

According to the study, at University College London (UCL), since COVID-19 broke out, there appeared to be a “concerning increase” of a rare brain inflammation, known to be triggered by viral infections.

In the UCL study, nine COVID-19 patients with brain inflammation were diagnosed with a rare condition called acute disseminated encephalomyelitis, which is typically seen in children and can affect both the brain and spinal cord.

India: Gujarat minister tests positive for coronavirus

Ahmedabad, Jul 8 (PTI) A Gujarat minister has tested positive for coronavirus, state Deputy Chief Minister Nitin Patel said on Wednesday.

"The minister has been admitted to a hospital in Ahmedabad after he tested positive for coronavirus," Patel, who holds charge of the health department, said ahead of the state cabinet meeting in Gandhinagar.

The BJP MLA from Valsad district is the first state minister to have contracted the viral infection.
