UN chief says coronavirus pandemic remains ‘out of control’; pushes for affordable vaccine

UNITED NATIONS, Sep 17 (APP): United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres has called the coronavirus pandemic the world’s top security threat, and called for greater cooperation in controlling outbreaks and developing an affordable vaccine.

“The outbreak remains out of control”, Secretary-General Antonio?Guterres declared in his press conference on Wednesday, ahead of the UN General Assembly (UNGA) High Level Week, noting that soon one million lives will be “lost to the virus”.

USA: ByteDance's bid to keep most of TikTok faces major hurdles

NEW YORK (Reuters) - China’s ByteDance faces an uphill struggle to convince the White House to allow it to keep majority ownership of its popular short video app TikTok in the United States, according to former national security officials and regulatory lawyers.

Trump ordered ByteDance last month to divest TikTok amid U.S. concerns that the personal data of as many as 100 million Americans that use the app could be passed on to China’s Communist Party government. He has threatened to ban TikTok in the United States as early as Sept. 20 if ByteDance does not comply.

UNITED NATIONS, Sept. 16 (Xinhua) -- United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Wednesday called on the international community to come together to defeat COVID-19.

"The virus is the number one global security threat in our world today," the UN chief said at a hybrid press conference, noting that this is the moment when "the international community needs to come together to defeat the virus."

US govt: Upcoming WeChat ‘ban’ won’t target its users

NEW YORK (AP) — A looming U.S. ban on the Chinese app WeChat won’t target people who use the app to communicate, according to a government court filing Wednesday.

President Donald Trump issued orders on Aug. 6 that targeted WeChat and TikTok as purported national-security threats and imposed a Sept. 20 deadline for the Commerce Department to draft specific measures for blocking “transactions” with the Chinese owners of the apps.

USA: New companies face tough task overcoming pandemic, recession

NEW YORK (AP) — Julie Campbell had to rethink her new wallpaper business before she could sell her first sheet.

Campbell launched Pasted Paper in February, but soon after, the coronavirus forced the cancellation of the trade shows where she expected to introduce her wallpaper to prospective retail customers. Suddenly, the $30,000 she’d invested in creating the wallpaper was at risk, dependent on her transforming the company to sell directly to consumers.

To save Pasted Paper, Campbell learned online selling and marketing — skills not immediately in her wheelhouse.

75th session of UN General Assembly opens

UNITED NATIONS, Sept. 15 (Xinhua) -- The 75th session of the UN General Assembly was on Tuesday declared open by new General Assembly President Volkan Bozkir.

In his opening remarks, Bozkir asked UN member states to uphold multilateralism.

"The context in which we are working serves to remind us of the necessity of the multilateral system and inspires us all to make use of the UN Charter to address our collective challenges," he said, referring to the COVID-19 pandemic.

USA: Science mag makes first endorsement in 175 years, taps Biden

NEW YORK (AP) — Even though Scientific American had never endorsed a presidential candidate in the magazine’s 175-year history, its top editor said Tuesday there was little internal debate over a decision to back Democrat Joe Biden.

Editor-in-Chief Laura Helmuth said President Donald Trump’s administration was much worse for the scientific community than the magazine had feared.

Afghanistan and India win seats in UN's CSW body

United Nations, Sep 15 (PTI) In a significant victory, India got elected as Member of the UN Commission on the Status of Women, the principal global body focussed on gender equality and women empowerment, beating China in a hotly-contested election.

The Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) is a functional commission of the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC).

USA: Rochester police chief out in fallout over Prude death

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (AP) — Rochester Mayor Lovely Warren fired the police chief and suspended her top lawyer and communications director Monday in the continuing upheaval over the suffocation death of Daniel Prude.

Chief Le’Ron Singletary announced his retirement last week as part of a major shakeup of the city’s police leadership but said he would stay on through the end of the month.
