India: PFI activist hacked to death in Kerala

Palakkad (Ker), Apr 15 (PTI) A 43-year old man was allegedly hacked to death in Kerala's Palakkad district on Friday.

Subair, a local leader of the Islamist outfit Popular Front of India, was hacked to death at Elappully in the district on Friday afternoon, police said.

He was allegedly hit by a car while on a bike and attacked using sharp-edged weapons.

The incident occurred when he was returning home after offering prayers in a nearby mosque.

India: Woman raped by auto driver, co-passenger in Aligarh

Aligarh, Apr 15 (PTI) A 30-year-old woman was allegedly raped by the driver, his helper and a passenger of an auto-rickshaw that she hired at the bus stand here to reach her village, police said on Friday.

The incident took place late Thursday evening when the woman took an auto from the Aligarh bus stand for her native village, about 15 km away from the city, they said.

In her complaint, the victim has alleged that the driver picked up another passenger for the same destination.

India: Man kills orphan niece for opposing molestation

Fatehpur, Apr 15 (PTI) A 42-year-old man allegedly axed his orphan niece to death in a village here after she spurned his sexual advances, police said on Friday.

Accused Ramgopal Singh attacked his niece late Thursday night after she objected to him when he molested her, Ghazipur police station's SHO Sangamlal Prajapati said.

The accused has been arrested, he said.

The 14-year-old girl's parents had died long ago and she had been living with her aunt in Rae Bareli and had come to her uncle's place a few days ago, the SHO said.

India: Jajmau looks distinct from what it was forty years ago

Kanpur: Jajmau is today wholly different from what it used to be about forty years ago. Quite strange it looks how the barren, desolate place has turned out to be an area with all the modern-day conveniences.

Talking to a few residents of the area, it was learnt that even salt was not available forty years ago in this tannery town.

India: Locals wade through dirty pond to garland Dr Ambedkar

Kanpur: Local people waded through a dirty pond to garland the Dalit icon's statue in the city's Juhi Bamburahiya on the auspicious occasion of the 131st birth anniversary of Dr Bhim Rao Ambedkar.

Dr Ambedkar's statue was reported to be erected in the middle of the pond for the past several years. There remained no attempt to remove to a better spot up to the day.

Every year on Ambedkar jayanti, the local councillor and his supporters have to brave the stench of the dirty water to lay wreaths and garland the statue of Dr Ambedkar.

India: UP minister got knee treatment at one-rupee prescription in Hallet

Kanpur: Troubled by knee pain, Minister of State, Labor and Employment Department, Manohar Lal reached the orthopaedic OPD of Hallet Hospital here.

Receiving a one-rupee prescription he asked the surgeon about his knee pain. His treatment was reportedly continued for about three hours.

Dr Sanjay Kumar looked at the minister's knee. Seeing the pain, his MRI and blood tests were also done. He was then taken to Artho's OT, where he was relieved by a small operation.

New Delhi, Apr 14 (PTI) No specific words against any community were uttered during an event held here in December last year, the Delhi Police has told the Supreme Court which is hearing a plea seeking direction to ensure investigation and action against those who allegedly made hate speeches during two events held in Haridwar and Delhi.

India: CNG price hiked by Rs 2.5 per kg, piped cooking gas by Rs 4.25

New Delhi, Apr 14 (PTI) Prices of CNG in the national capital on Thursday were hiked by Rs 2.50 per kg and that of piped cooking gas by Rs 4.25 per unit to record levels on the back of surge in raw material cost.

CNG in the national capital territory of Delhi now costs Rs 71.61 per kg, up from Rs 69.11 per kg, according to the information posted on the website of Indraprastha Gas Ltd (IGL) -- the firm which retails CNG and piped cooking gas in the national capital and adjoining cities.

India: Ambedkar's statue disfigured in UP

Noida, Apr 14 (PTI) A statue of B R Ambedkar, the key architect of India's Constitution, was found disfigured in Uttar Pradesh's Noida on his birth anniversary Thursday, prompting police to launch a probe into the matter.

The disfigured statue is located in Chhijarsi village under the Sector 63 police station limits area and the incident was reported by locals in the morning, officials said.

A police spokesperson said a new statue was being installed to replace the disfigured one with the help of residents.
