India: AK-47 rifles, pistols recovered by BSF along border in Punjab

New Delhi, Dec 11 (PTI) A cache of arms and ammunition, including two AK-47 assault rifles, was recovered by Border Security Force (BSF) troops on Sunday along the India-Pakistan International Border in Punjab, officials said.

The recovery was made around 12 noon.

Two AK-47 rifles and four magazines apart from two pistols and four magazines and some cartridges were recovered by BSF personnel during checks in the Abohar sector of Punjab, a senior officer said. PTI NES.

New Delhi, Dec 11 (PTI) The Congress is best placed to be the "pole" around which a non-BJP front can be built for the 2024 general elections, senior party leader P Chidambaram said on Sunday and asserted that the Aam Aadmi Party does not have much appeal outside Delhi with the exception of Haryana and Punjab.

Chidambaram also stressed that there were lessons to be learnt by the Congress from the Gujarat loss, saying there is no such thing as a "silent" campaign in a hard-fought election.

New Delhi, Dec 11 (PTI) Delhi BJP president Adesh Gupta resigned on Sunday, days after the party's defeat in the municipal corporation polls to the Aam Aadmi Party.

The BJP's Delhi unit vice president Virendra Sachdeva has been appointed acting president.

The Aam Aadmi Party ended the BJP's 15-year-rule in the Municipal of Delhi (MCD) poll in results announced on Wednesday. The AAP won the elections with 134 seats, while the BJP bagged 104.

India: Sukhwinder Sukhu sworn in as Himachal's 15th CM

Shimla, Dec 11 (PTI) Congress leader Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu, a four-time MLA, was on Sunday sworn in as the 15th chief minister of Himachal Pradesh in a ceremony attended by senior party figures including Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra. Sukhu, 58, was administered the oath of office and secrecy by Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar at a ceremony under the open sky at the historic Ridge ground here.

Mukesh Agnihotri, the leader of opposition in the outgoing assembly, was administered the oath as the deputy chief minister.

India: Severe cyclonic storm Mandous to cross India's coastal areas

NEW DELHI, Dec. 9 (Xinhua) -- The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) Friday said severe cyclonic storm Mandous is likely to cross north Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and adjoining Andhra Pradesh coast during midnight or early Saturday.

"The severe cyclonic storm Mandous over Southwest Bay of Bengal moved west-northwestwards with a speed of 12 kmph during past six hours, weakened into a cyclonic storm and lay centered at 8:30 a.m. local time."

The cyclone is being monitored by Doppler Weather Radar Karaikal and Chennai," the IMD in a statement said.

Indian PM's party faces electoral defeat in Delhi

NEW DELHI, Dec. 7 (Xinhua) -- Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's party, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Wednesday faced defeat in Delhi's local body polls after 15 years of service covering three consecutive terms.

The 10-year-old Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), which currently rules the Delhi state, emerged as the winner in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) elections, the voting for which was held on Sunday.

In the 250-member strong MCD house, the AAP won 134 seats and the BJP's candidates won in 104 wards.

India: 30-minute disruption at Kanpur municipal commissioner's office

Kanpur: An argument broke out between Municipal Commissioner Shivsharanappa GN and BJP leader Kapil Gupta here on Tuesday.

The security personnel security threw the BJP leader out of the Municipal Commissioner's office. Then, they dragged them out of the office door. The employees even flayed him for doing gimmicks. There was chaos in the Municipal Commissioner's office.
