Indian SC dismisses Bilkis Bano's plea for reviewing order asking Gujarat to examine rapists' remission application

New Delhi, Dec 17 (PTI) The Supreme Court has dismissed a plea filed by Bilkis Bano seeking a review of its May 13 verdict by which it had said the state of Gujarat was the "appropriate government" competent to examine the application for the pre-mature release filed by a convict in the gang-rape and murder case.

Bano's separate petition challenging the remission of the sentences of the 11 convicts by the state government is pending before the Supreme Court. She was gang-raped and seven members of her family were killed during the 2002 Gujarat riots.

SC dismisses plea against Rahul Gandhi's election from Wayanad in 2019 Lok Sabha polls

New Delhi, Dec 17 (PTI) The Supreme Court has dismissed a plea challenging the election of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi in 2019 from Wayanad Lok Sabha constituency in Kerala.

A bench of justices A S Bopanna and Dipankar Datta rejected the petition filed by Saritha S Nair, who had moved the apex court against an October 31, 2019 decision of the Kerala High Court by which her election petitions challenging the Lok Sabha polls in Wayanad and Ernakulam also were dismissed.

India: Govt says it has sufficient foodgrain stocks to meet requirements of welfare schemes

New Delhi, Dec 17 (PTI) The Centre on Saturday said it has sufficient foodgrain stocks to meet the requirements under the food security law and other welfare schemes.

The government is also regularly monitoring the prices of essential commodities.

"Government of India has sufficient foodgrain stocks under central pool to meet the requirement of NFSA and its other welfare schemes as well as for additional allocation of PMGKAY," an official statement said.

India: Class 10 student jumps from school terrace, condition critical

Kanpur: A girl student of class 10 jumped from the school terrace allegedly after being reprimanded by her teacher at Kanpur Cantonment Board School on Wednesday.

The student was identified as Shivani who has been admitted to a hospital in critical condition.

The teacher Ghanshyam allegedly hurt the feelings of Shivani in front of the class and said, "Should I get a quilt-mattress for you in school".

Distressed by the ridicule, Shivani jumped from the terrace of the school.

New safety norms likely to hit EV production in India

MUMBAI, Dec. 13 (Xinhua) -- The production and sales of electric vehicles (EVs) in India are expected to be hit in the coming months by new rules on battery safety as a stumbling block, said a report by The Economic Times on Tuesday.

The new safety norms have been put in place following several incidents of fire in EVs in recent months, which are being implemented in two phases - with effect from Dec. 1, and April 1 next year.

The second phase or norm involves fixing additional sensors and sending out warnings in case of thermal heating.

Indian, Chinese troops suffer minor injuries in clash on Dec 9: Indian army

MUMBAI, Dec 12 (Reuters) - Indian and Chinese troops suffered minor injuries in a clash in the Tawang sector of India's Arunachal Pradesh state on Dec. 9, the Indian army said on Monday, the first such incident since the deadly clash between the two neighbours in June 2020.

Arunachal Pradesh is located on India's eastern tip and shares a border with China.

"Both sides immediately disengaged from the area," the army said, adding that the incident was followed by its commander in the area holding a meeting with his Chinese counterpart to discuss the issue.

India's retail inflation eases to 5.88 pct in November

NEW DELHI, Dec. 12 (Xinhua) -- India's retail inflation eased to 5.88 percent in November, data released by the ministry of statistics and programme implementation (MoSPI) showed Monday.

"The inflation based on Consumer Price Index (CPI) in November is 5.88 percent," said the data report. "It was 6.77 percent in October."

Food inflation has eased to 4.67 percent in November from 7.01 percent in October.

"The Consumer Food Price Index (CFPI) eased to 4.67 percent in the month of November. The CFPI in October was 7.01 percent," said the data report.

India: MP man jailed for life for raping teen daughter

Indore, Dec 10 (PTI) A man was sentenced to imprisonment till the end of his natural life by a court in Indore in Madhya Pradesh on Saturday for repeatedly raping his 13-year-old daughter.

Special Judge Surekha Mishra sentenced the 32-year-old man under relevant provisions of the Indian Penal Code and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses (POCSO) Act and also fined him Rs 6,000, a prosecution officer said.

The court also recommended that the rape victim be paid a compensation of Rs three lakh from the exchequer.

UN chief insisted on importance of protection of human rights defenders in India

United Nations, Dec 11 (PTI) UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has said that he insisted publicly on the importance of guaranteeing civic space and protection of human rights defenders as well as environmental activists during his recent visits to India and Vietnam.
