Asian stocks rebound after Trump avoids reigniting trade war

BEIJING (AP) — Asian stock markets rebounded Monday after President Donald Trump avoided reigniting a trade war with China amid tension over Hong Kong and the coronavirus pandemic.

Hong Kong’s benchmark gained more than 3% and Shanghai and Tokyo rose more than 1%.

Global markets sank Friday as investors waited for Trump’s response to Beijing’s security law on Hong Kong. In the end, Trump ended Hong Kong’s special trade status and suspended visas of some Chinese students but avoided pulling out of a truce in a tariff war with Beijing that weighs on global growth.

Chinese-made coronavirus vaccine may appear in market by 2020 end

BEIJING, May 31 (APP): A Chinese-made coronavirus vaccine may appear in the market at the end of 2020 or the beginning of 2021, according to China’s State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission (SASAC).

The inactivated vaccine is being researched and developed by Sinopharm’s subsidiary company, Wuhan Institute of Biological Products and Beijing Institute of Biological Products.

So far, over 2,000 people have received vaccines injections and data show that both of its safety and effectiveness have been fully verified, China Economic Net reported on Sunday.

Uzbekistan Announces Tender For Construction Of Three New Hydro-power Plants

TASHKENT, May 31 (NNN-AGENCIES) – Uzbekistan’s Energy Ministry, announced invitation to bid for the design and construction of three hydro-power plants in southern Kashkadaria region, with support from the Asian Development Bank (ADB), the ministry said, Saturday.

Uzbekistan received funding from the ADB for the Sustainable Hydro-power Project, under which Rabat, Chappasuy and Tamshush hydro-power plants on the Aksu River will be built, according to the ministry.

Myanmar: All Gov’t Staff To Return To Work From Tomorrow

YANGON, May 31 (NNN-MNA) – The Myanmar government has ordered all staff to return to work as usual, starting tomorrow, a government official told a press briefing on Saturday.

“Due to the COVID-19 outbreak, the government ordered half of the staff to stay at home in recent months,” said Zaw Htay, spokesperson of the President’s Office.

The offices must follow the health measures issued by the Ministry of Health and Sports, he said.

Meanwhile, basic education schools will be reopened in mid-July.

China media, Hong Kong government bristle at Trump's pledge of curbs, sanctions

HONG KONG/BEIJING (Reuters) - China’s state media and the government of Hong Kong lashed out on Sunday at U.S. President Donald Trump’s vow to end Hong Kong’s special status if Beijing imposes new national security laws on the city, which is bracing for fresh protests.

Trump on Friday pledged to “take action to revoke Hong Kong’s preferential treatment as a separate customs and travel territory”, and to impose sanctions on unspecified individuals over Beijing’s new laws on the Asian financial centre.

Thailand's parliament approves $58 billion economic package to ease virus impact

BANGKOK (Reuters) - Thailand’s parliament passed a 1.9 trillion baht ($58 billion) economic support package on Sunday to ease the impact of the coronavirus.

The legislation, comprising three bills, include a government plan to borrow 1 trillion baht and central bank measures worth another 900 billion baht in soft loans and support for corporate bonds.

Of the 1 trillion baht of borrowing, 600 billion baht will be for public heath works and relief measures, and the rest for rebuilding the economy and job creation.

Washington faces blast at home, abroad for "terminating" ties with WHO

BEIJING, May 31 (Xinhua) -- The U.S. government has been slammed at home and abroad after announcing on Friday "terminating" its relationship with the World Health Organization (WHO).

U.S. health experts and lawmakers have expressed concern over the decision announced by President Donald Trump amid the COVID-19 outbreak.

Patrice Harris, president of the American Medical Association, described Trump's move as a "senseless" action with "significant, harmful repercussions."

HKSAR gov't voices deep regret over U.S. smearing China's legitimate rights to protect national security

HONG KONG, May 30 (Xinhua) -- China's Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) government on Saturday voiced deep regret that the U.S. government continued to smear and demonize the legitimate rights and duty of China to safeguard national security in the HKSAR which is aimed at restoring stability to Hong Kong society.

A spokesperson of the HKSAR government made the remarks in response to the statement by U.S. President Donald Trump and comments by the U.S. State Department over the past two days.
