China gifts El Salvador stadium, library after Taiwan switch

BEIJING, Dec 4 (NNN-AGENCIES) — China has agreed to pay for a new national stadium and library in El Salvador as part of an infrastructure package promised to the country after it switched allegiance from Taiwan to Beijing.

President Xi Jinping met with Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele on Tuesday (Dec 4) during the Central American leader’s first visit to Beijing since being sworn into office this summer.

After four-year gap, China's top diplomat visits South Korea to mend ties

SEOUL (Reuters) - China’s top diplomat arrived in Seoul on Wednesday, visiting South Korea for the first time in more than four years as the two countries seek to repair ties that soured over the deployment of U.S. anti-missile systems in South Korea.

During his two-day stay the State Councillor Wang Yi will meet South Korean Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha and President Moon Jae-in, officials in Seoul said.

Yi last visited the South Korean capital for a trilateral meeting, also attended by Japan, in 2015.

Mahathir, world's oldest prime minister, prepares to host his second APEC summit

KUALA LUMPUR (Reuters) - Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad formally launched on Wednesday preparations to host next year’s APEC summit, recalling with pride how his country hosted the event more than 20 years ago, but also flagging risks.

The 94-year-old, who unexpectedly won a general election last year, has said he will stay on as prime minister to see through the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit before possibly handing the baton to a coalition colleague. He will be the first world leader to host the event twice.

Chinese troops head to Pakistan for “Warrior VII joint military drills

BEIJING, Dec 3 (APP): China and Pakistan will hold a month-long joint military exercise to boost cooperation between the two militaries and capability to jointly deal with terrorist threats including those targeting joint projects with China.

A Chinese unit from a special forces brigade of the People’s Liberation Army Xinjiang Military Region has departed from their base camp and began mobilizing in Pakistan for the “Warrior VII” joint exercise, using vehicles and aerial transportation, according to a statement released by China’s Ministry of National Defense.

Japanese man, 71, arrested for 'making 24,000 complaint calls'

3 December 2019; AFP: A Japanese pensioner has been arrested after ringing a phone company 24,000 times to complain they had violated his contract, police and local media reported.

Tokyo police said they took 71-year-old Akitoshi Okamoto into custody last week after he made hundreds of toll-free calls over eight days to the customer service section of major telephone operator KDDI.

Typhoon Kammuri kills two in Philippines, closes Manila airport

3 December 2019; AFP: Typhoon Kammuri killed at least two people in the Philippines on Tuesday as it tore roofs of houses and forced the international airport in Manila to shut down.

The storm roared ashore late Monday and passed south of Manila -- home to 13 million people -- and thousands of athletes at the regional Southeast Asian Games.

Zahid, wife spent RM1.3 mln including on high-end shopping abroad

KUALA LUMPUR,  Dec 2 (NNN-BERNAMA) — Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi paid almost RM1.3 million for his four credit cards between January 2014 and January 2016, including on high-end shopping in the United Arab Emirates, United States and Italy, the High Court here heard today.

This was disclosed by senior vice-president of Ambank Berhad (Ambank) in charge of management of credit card authorisation and fraud control, Yeoh Eng Leong, 58.

ADB Approves 400-Million-USD Loan, To Boost Philippines’ Youth Employment

MANILA, Dec 3 (NNN-PNA) – The Asian Development Bank (ADB), said today (Tuesday) that it has approved a 400-million-U.S. dollar policy-based loan, to support the Philippine government’s efforts, to reduce the number of out-of-school and unemployed young Filipinos, that impedes more inclusive growth in the country.

The Manila-based ADB said, this programme will support government reforms, aimed at improving the employability of young Filipinos, through labour market programmes and providing easier access to on-the-job training schemes, to help them secure and retain jobs.

Manila’s Int’l Airport To Close For 12 Hours Due To Typhoon Kammuri

MANILA, Dec 3 (NNN-PNA) – Manila’s international airport, the Ninoy Aquino International Airport, will be closed for 12 hours starting 11 a.m. today (Tuesday), due to the threat posed by powerful typhoon Kammuri, airport authorities said on Monday.

Ed Monreal, general manager of the Manila international airport authority, said that the airport will be closed from 11 a.m. until 11 p.m. today.

“This is technically force majeure, and for safety of the passengers,” Monreal told a news conference. Monreal said, a total of 438 flights are going to be affected.
