Trump asks Japan to hike payments for U.S. troops to $8 billion: Foreign Policy

TOKYO (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump has asked Japan to quadruple annual payments for U.S. forces stationed there to around $8 billion, Foreign Policy reported, part of Washington’s efforts to press its allies to increase their defense spending.

The current agreement that covers the 54,000 U.S. troops stationed in Japan expires in March 2021.

Japan, S.Korean business lobbies agree to deepen ties through dialogue

TOKYO, Nov. 15 (Xinhua) -- Business lobbies from Japan and South Korea agreed here on Friday that the continuation of dialogue was important as is the cooperation by both sides towards future-oriented relations.

The agreement was made amid strained political ties between both countries related to an ongoing wartime labor dispute that has spilled over into a tit-for-tat trade spat.

China owns 2,750 natural reserves

BEIJING, Nov. 16 (Xinhua) -- China owned 2,750 natural reserves across the country at the end of September 2019, data from the National Forestry and Grassland Administration (NFGA) showed.

China's natural reserves cover a total area of 1.47 million square kilometers, accounting for 15 percent of the country's land territory, according to a statement on the administration's website.

China best country for Iranian students to continue study: Sattari

Beijing, Nov 15, IRNA -- Iranian Vice President for Scientific and Technological Affairs Sourena Sattari on Thursday described China as one of the forerunners in the field modern technologies, saying that Chinese universities are the best places for Iranian students to continue their studies in technological courses.

Addressing a gathering of scientific community of the Iranians residing in China late on Thursday, he added that China has an eastern attitude towards modern and startup technologies, as its thoughts are totally different from those of others.

Hong Kong confirms economy fell into recession amid protests, trade war

HONG KONG (Reuters) - Hong Kong sank into recession for the first time in a decade in the third quarter, government data confirmed on Friday, weighed down by increasingly violent anti-government protests and the escalating U.S.-China trade war.

The economy shrank by 3.2% in July-September from the previous quarter on a seasonally adjusted basis, revised government data showed, in line with a preliminary reading.

Gross domestic product (GDP) contracted for the second consecutive quarter, meeting the technical definition of a recession.

China strongly condemns attack on Hong Kong government official in London

BEIJING (Reuters) - China’s embassy in the United Kingdom strongly condemned and expressed strong indignation on Friday at the attack on a Hong Kong government official in London.

Protesters had an altercation with Hong Kong’s Secretary for Justice Teresa Cheng, who suffered “serious bodily harm”, according to a statement from the Hong Kong government, but no further details were given.

Mekong countries and U.N. agree to jointly fight drug scourge

BANGKOK (Reuters) - Five Southeast Asian countries, China, and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) agreed on Friday to improve intelligence sharing and law enforcement operations to fight drug trafficking in the region by transnational crime groups.

Southeast Asia’s Golden Triangle - northern Myanmar and parts of Thailand and Laos - has long been a hub of illicit drug production and trafficking.

7.1-magnitude quake strikes off central, eastern Indonesia, tsunami alert issued

JAKARTA, Nov. 15 (Xinhua) -- An earthquake with a revised 7.1-magnitude rocked eastern and central parts of Indonesia on Thursday evening and was potential for a tsunami, the meteorology and geophysics agency said.

Previously the agency released the quake's magnitude at 7.4 before the revision, head of quake department of the agency Rahmat Triyono said on early Friday morning.

Holed up in university, Hong Kong protesters issue demands

HONG KONG (AP) — Protesters who have barricaded themselves in a Hong Kong university partially cleared a road they were blocking and demanded that the government commit to holding local elections on Nov. 24.

One lane of the Tolo Highway was cleared in both directions Friday morning, but the road remained closed after workers sent to clean up shattered glass and other remaining debris were threatened by protesters with bows and arrow and hard objects, authorities said.

Yuantong Airlines starts regular Kashgar-Karachi cargo service

BEIJING, Nov 14 (APP): Yuantong Airlines has started a regular cargo service between Karachi and China’s Xinjiang Kashgar as the first cargo plane loaded with 9.25 tons of goods including chilled aquatic products such as squid, octopus, and shrimp, arrived at Kashgar Airport.

This is the first international regular cargo route to Pakistan opened by Kashgar Airport and the sixth international full cargo flight route launched by Xinjiang Airport Group in 2019.

The airline will operate a Boeing B757-200F, a full cargo aircraft once a week on the route.
