Hungary opposes new EU sanctions, military assistance to Ukraine — top diplomat

BUDAPEST, May 22. /TASS/: Budapest opposes a number of key provisions in the 11th package of sanctions on Russia developed by the European Commission and will not support giving any additional military assistance from the European Peace Facility until its OTP Bank is taken off of Ukraine’s list of international war sponsors, Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto said on Monday.

Ukraine restores power to Russia-occupied nuclear plant

May 22 (Reuters) - Ukraine reconnected the Russian-occupied Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant to its external power supply on Monday after a brief outage that had left it reliant on emergency generators.

Back-up diesel generators had earlier kicked in at the plant in southern Ukraine to ensure nuclear fuel was kept cool and prevent a potential disaster.

Fire destroys main post office in Philippine capital, a nearly 100-year-old neoclassical landmark

MANILA, Philippines (AP) — A massive fire tore through Manila’s historic post office building overnight, slightly injuring seven people and razing the nearly 100-year-old landmark in the Philippine capital, police and postal officials said Monday.

The fire started before midnight in the basement of the neoclassical, five-story building and was brought under control Monday morning more than seven hours after it began, firefighters said.

3 dead in shooting at Kansas City bar in U.S.

WASHINGTON, May 21 (Xinhua) -- Three people were killed following a shooting at a bar in Kansas City in the U.S. state of Missouri early Sunday, local media reported, citing police sources.

Two of the victims were killed at the scene, and a third victim died later at a hospital, said Kansas City police.

According to the police, two other injured people have been taken to the hospital.

India issues heatwave alert for 7 states

NEW DELHI, May 21 (Xinhua) -- India Meteorological Department has issued a heatwave alert for seven states, officials said on Sunday.

Heat wave conditions are very likely over some areas of Uttar Pradesh and Gangetic West Bengal, Jharkhand, south Haryana, West Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh and north Madhya Pradesh, according to the department.

Hot and discomforting weather is expected over Odisha during the next five days, as well as over Konkan region, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, and Kerala until Monday.

Iran Summoned Swiss Ambassador Over “Fake” Flag Photo

TEHRAN, May 22 (NNN-TASNIM) – The Iranian Foreign Ministry, yesterday summoned the Swiss ambassador, to protest the embassy’s posting of a photo of a “fake” Iranian flag.

The summons came, after the Swiss embassy in Tehran published on Friday, a post and a photo showing a “fake” flag of Iran, instead of the official one, on its Twitter page, expressing its condemnation of Iran’s execution of three convicts, who killed security officers in an armed attack last year, the report said.

Sudan: Army, RSF agree to 7-day humanitarian truce, cease-fire

22 May 2023; MEMO: The Sudanese army and Rapid Support Forces agreed Saturday to a seven-day cease-fire, according to Al Jazeera, based on sources from the Saudi Arabian Foreign Ministry, Anadolu reports.

Saudi-funded Al-Arabiya television reported that the agreement between the army and the paramilitary group will take effect in 48 hours.

It includes allowing armed groups involved in the conflict to evacuate hospitals and facilitating the repair of facilities serving the public.

Moldova: Court of Appeals confirms victory of Sor party candidate in Gagauzia election

CHISINAU, May 22. /TASS/: The Comrat Court of Appeals has certified the victory of Evghenia Gutul from the Sor opposition party in the gubernatorial runoff in Moldova’s Gagauz autonomy at its meeting on Monday.

"To recognize as valid the mandate of Evghenia Gutul, the elected head of Gagauzia. The decision takes effect immediately after being passed," Judge Andrei Mironov read out the ruling. The court's meeting looked into the Central Election Commission’s report about the results of the election on May 14.

French Open offers players protection against online harassment

PARIS (AP) — French Open organizers are giving all players access to an online tool meant to protect them from cyberbullying and harassment on social media.

The French tennis federation said Monday the technology developed by a French company will be made available to all players taking part in this year’s clay-court Grand Slam tournament. The software uses artificial intelligence to filter comments posted to social media accounts and block those that are deemed toxic or abusive.

Taiwan excluded from WHO annual assembly following Chinese opposition

GENEVA, May 22 (Reuters) - Taiwan failed on Monday in its efforts to gain an invitation to the World Health Organization's annual assembly despite the island's assertion that support was growing for its participation.

The annual assembly in Geneva decided not to extend Taiwan an invitation to the event, which runs from May 21-30. China and Pakistan urged members to reject Taiwan's inclusion, while eSwatini and the Marshall Islands spoke in favour.
