Trump awards Presidential Medal of Freedom to Tiger Woods

7 May 2019; AFP: Tiger Woods, fresh off his epic comeback victory in the Masters, was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Donald Trump at the White House on Monday.

Presenting the golfing great with the nation's highest honor, Trump praised Woods' "relentless will to win, win, win."

"These qualities embody the American spirit of pushing boundaries, defying limits and always striving for greatness," the president said.

Verdict in case of Russian footballers to be announced on May 8

MOSCOW, May 6. /TASS/: Moscow's Presnensky court will announce the verdict in the case of Russian footballers Alexander Kokorin and Pavel Mamaev accused of hooliganism, a TASS correspondent reported from the courtroom on Monday.

"The verdict will be announced on May 8 at 2pm Moscow time," the judge said.

On Monday, case prosecutor Svetlana Tarasova asked to sentence Kokorin to 18 months in prison and Mamaev to 17 months in prison. Other defendants in the case - Alexander Protasovitsky and Kirill Kokorin - face prison terms of 17 months and 18 months respectively.

Konyukhov becomes world’s first to cross 55th parallel south in rowboat

Brazil: Pele hails sensational Messi

RIO DE JANEIRO, May 2 (Xinhua): Brazil legend Pele on Thursday paid tribute to Lionel Messi after the forward scored his 600th goal for Barcelona during his team's 3-0 win over Liverpool in the first leg of their Champions League semifinal.

The 31-year-old Argentina international reached the milestone with a curling 30-yard free-kick, his second goal of Wednesday's match at the Camp Nou, as Barcelona edged toward a place in the final.

"I would like to congratulate you, Lionel Messi, for your 600th goal. What a way to score it. Sensational," Pele said in a Twitter post.

Herrmann pens contract extension at Monchengladbach

BERLIN, May 2 (Xinhua): Patrick Herrmann has extended his expiring contract with Borussia Monchengladbach, the Bundesliga outfit confirmed in an official statement on Thursday.

The attacking midfielder has penned a three-year contract extension and will stay with the "Foals" until June 2022.

"I play for Borussia for so long and everyone knows who much my heart is attacked to this club. So I am all the happier that I am allowed to play here for at least three more years," Herrmann told the club's official homepage.

WADA successfully retrieves doping samples from Moscow lab

MOSCOW, April 30. /TASS/: Experts of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) have successfully retrieved doping samples from the Moscow laboratory, the WADA press service informed on Friday.

"WADA can confirm that a five-person team has successfully retrieved 2,262 samples from the laboratory, which had been split into A and B samples and contained within 4,524 collection bottles," the press service stated. "The samples have now been taken out of Moscow and are on their way to a WADA-accredited laboratory outside of Russia".

Ajax beat Tottenham 1-0 in first leg of Champions League semifinal

LONDON, April 30 (Xinhua): Ajax took a 1-0 lead over hosts Tottenham in the first leg of the European Champions League semifinal thanks to a goal from Donny van de Beek here on Tuesday.

Van de Beek broke the deadlock in the 15th minute when he received a through pass from Hakim Ziyech and slot it past Hugo Lloris.

Tottenham, without injured Harry Kane and suspended Son Heung-min, nearly conceded a second 10 minutes later, but Van de Beek's shot was well saved by the French goalkeeper.

Indian wrestler Bajrang regains world number one spot

New Delhi, Apr 17 (PTI) Top Indian grappler Bajrang Punia regained the world number one spot in the men's 65kg freestyle category in the rankings issued by United World Wrestling on Wednesday.

The 25-year-old Indian, who won gold in the Asian Games and Commonwealth Games as well as a silver in the World Championships last year, secured 58 ranking points ahead of Akhmed Chakaev of Russia, who has 21 points in his kitty.
