UK PM May backs Britain and Ireland hosting 2030 FIFA World Cup

LONDON, Feb. 5 (Xinhua) -- British Prime Minister Theresa May told business leaders in Belfast Tuesday she backs the idea of Britain and the Irish Republic co-hosting the FIFA World Cup in 2030.

May raised the prospect of the World Cup returning to Britain for the first time since 1966 during a visit to Northern Ireland.

'French Spiderman' arrested after scaling Manila skyscraper

29 Jan 2019; AFP: French urban freeclimber Alain Robert was arrested on Tuesday, police said, after he scaled one of Manila's tallest towers in his latest high-risk ascent.

The 56-year old adventurer dubbed the "French spiderman" climbed the 47-storey GT Tower without safety equipment, leaving watchers on the ground staring in amazement.

India conquer another series in New Zealand

Australian Open: Pliskova knocks out Serena Williams

23 Jan 2019; AA: Former world number one Serena Williams was knocked out in the Australian Open by seventh seed Czech Karolina Pliskova on Wednesday.

The 26-year-old Czech beat the 37-year-old American 6-4, 4-6, 7-5 to advance the semifinals. Williams missed four match points.

World number seven Pliskova will face world number four Naomi Osaka in the semifinals.

Naomi Osaka also defeated Ukrainian Elina Svitolina to advance to the semifinals in the Australian Open on Wednesday.

Ronaldo avoids jail but hit by hefty fine for tax fraud in Spain

23 Jan 2019; AFP: Cristiano Ronaldo avoided jail on Tuesday but was ordered by a Spanish court to pay 3.57 million euros ($4.1 million) for committing tax fraud when he was at Real Madrid.

The court sentenced him to a two-year jail sentence that it immediately reduced to a fine of 365,000 euros, which adds on to another penalty of 3.2 million euros, the sentence read.

Ronaldo faces multi-million tax fraud fine in Madrid court

22 Jan 2019; AFP: Cristiano Ronaldo is returning to Madrid for a court date on Tuesday in which he could be fined 18.8 million euros ($21.4 million) for tax fraud as part of a deal reached with the Spanish taxman.

As part of an agreement arranged in June with the former Real Madrid hero's lawyers, prosecutors are also asking that the Portuguese attacker, who last summer left the Spanish capital for Italian champions Juventus, be handed a 23-month jail sentence.

Italian runner covers nearly 40 km at bone-chilling minus 52 C in Siberia

YAKUTSK, January 20. /TASS/. Italian extreme sports lover Paolo Venturini ran nearly 40 km in northern Yakutia’s Oymyakon region where temperature hit minus 52 degrees Celsius, the local department for external relations told reporters on Sunday.

"Paolo Venturini ran for three hours, 54 minutes and 10 seconds covering the 39.12 km from Tomtor to Oymyakon with the temperature of minus 52 degrees," the department’s press service said.
