Consultations ongoing to end war in Afghanistan, president says

BEIRUT, August 14. /TASS/: Afghan President Ashraf Ghani has said that consultations on a ceasefire between government forces and the Taliban movement (outlawed in Russia) are underway.

"Consultations are ongoing, and the results will be shared with you soon," he said in a televised address on Saturday. The president stressed that it was essential to find a political solution that would guarantee lasting peace and stability.

Nobody's running Lebanon, central bank boss says

BEIRUT, Aug 14 (Reuters) - Lebanon's central bank governor said nobody was running the country, hitting back after government criticism of his decision to halt fuel subsidies that have drained currency reserves.

In an interview broadcast on Saturday, Riad Salameh said the government could resolve the problem quickly by passing necessary legislation.

He denied he had acted alone in declaring an end to the subsidies on Wednesday, and said it was widely known that the decision was coming. 

Over Half Of Migrant Workers In Lebanon Need Urgent Humanitarian Assistance

BEIRUT, Aug 11 (NNN-NNA) – The International Organisation for Migration (IOM), warned that, more than half of migrant workers in Lebanon are in need of urgent humanitarian assistance, to survive an economic crisis that has plunged most of the population into poverty, a statement released by the UN reported.

“They have lost their jobs. They are hungry, they cannot access medical care and feel unsafe,” IOM Lebanon’s Head of Office, Mathieu Luciano, said.

Lebanon's Aoun shields patriarch after he urged halt to rockets

BEIRUT, Aug 10 (Reuters) - President Michel Aoun on Tuesday condemned criticism of Lebanon's Christian Maronite patriarch after he expressed opposition to the Iran-backed Shi'ite group Hezbollah, warning that insults must be avoided to safeguard national unity.

Following a cross-border salvo between Israel and Hezbollah, Patriarch Bechara Boutros Al-Rai was sharply critical of Hezbollah on Sunday, saying no group should decide on war and peace and urging the army to halt rocket fire from the south.

Hezbollah fires back as Israel shells south Lebanon

06 Aug 2021; MEMO: Lebanon's Hezbollah movement said it had fired rockets at open ground near Israeli positions in the disputed Shebaa Farms area today in response to Israeli airstrikes which struck sites belonging to the group yesterday.

The Israeli military said at least ten rockets were launched towards Israel from southern Lebanon.

"In response to the 10+ rockets just fired at Israel from Lebanon, we are currently striking the rocket launch sites in Lebanon," the Israeli army said in a statement.

Lebanon: Hezbollah says fired rockets after Israeli airstrikes

BEIRUT (AP) — The militant Hezbollah group said it fired a barrage of rockets near Israeli positions close to the Lebanese border on Friday, calling it retaliation for Israeli airstrikes on southern Lebanon a day earlier.

Israel said it was firing back after at least 10 rockets were launched from Lebanon, and Prime Minister Naftali Bennett swiftly convened a meeting with the country’s top defense officials.

Mired in crises, Lebanon marks 1 year since horrific blast

Lebanon: Geagea calls for early parliamentary elections to solve crisis

03 Aug 2021; MEMO: The head of the Lebanese Forces party, Samir Geagea, yesterday called for early parliamentary elections to be held in order to resolve Lebanon's crises.

Geagea's call came during a rally organised by his party in Beirut to commemorate the first anniversary of the Beirut post explosion which killed more than 200 people and wounded 7,000 others on 4 August 2020.
