India: Woman kills husband who had five wives

Nagpur, Mar 11 (PTI) A woman has been arrested here for allegedly killing her husband, a police official said on Thursday.

Swati Laxman Malik (28), the accused, was the fifth wife of victim Laxman Ramlal Malik (65), a resident of Jaripatka, police said.

According to police, Laxman had disowned his younger son from Swati as he suspected her fidelity.

India: Debt-ridden farmer ends life in Nagpur district

Nagpur, Mar 10 (PTI) A debt-ridden farmer committed suicide by hanging himself at Mahadula in Nagpur district, police said on Wednesday.

The deceased was identified as Rameshwar Shivcharan Kelekar (30).

As per his family, Kelekar had taken loans of over Rs 2 lakh from a nationalized bank and also by mortgaging jewelery but suffered losses as his cotton crop was damaged by unseasonal rains.

He had sold his paddy crop to the Maharashtra State Co-op Tribal Development Corporation but was yet to receive Rs 50,000 from it.

India: Gold coins from Mughal period found near Pune

Pune, Mar 9 (PTI) Over 200 Mughal-era gold coins, dating back to the early 18th century, have been seized from the possession of a family of construction workers in Pimpri Chinchwad near here, police said on Tuesday.

Some members of the family had found the coins while working at a construction site, said Pimpri Chinchwad Police Commissioner Krishna Prakash.

India: Pune cops arrest second Major rank officer in Army paper leak case

Pune, Mar 9 (PTI) Pune police on Tuesday arrested another Major rank officer in connection with the February 28 Army recruitment exam paper leak, an official said.

The 45-year-old serving officer was detained in Delhi for questioning and arrested after being brought here, he said.

The arrested officer had forwarded the question paper to one of the accused, the Pune police official said on condition of anonymity.

He will be produced in court on Wednesday, he added.

India: SC seeks states' response on quota to specific class

New Delhi, Mar 8 (PTI) The Supreme Court sought responses from states on Monday on a question of "seminal importance" whether legislatures were competent to declare a particular caste to be socially and educationally backward for grant of quota.

The top court will examine the question of interpretation of the 102nd amendment to the Constitution dealing with reservation to a particular community, named in the list prepared by the President.

India: Woman's death in Pune: BJP corporator summoned by cops

Pune, Mar 6 (PTI) A local BJP corporator has been summoned by the police in connection with the death of a 23- year-old woman in Pune, an official said on Saturday.

The case of the woman, who was found dead in Hadapsar on February 8, is at the centre of an acrimonious fight between the Maharashtra government and the opposition BJP, and has seen a Shiv Sena minister being linked to the incident resigning.

India: Poet-activist Varavara Rao discharged from hospital in Mumbai

Mumbai, Mar 7 (PTI) Poet-activist Varavara Rao, an accused in the Elgar Parishad-Maoist links case, has been discharged from Nanavati Hospital here, sources said.

The 82-year-old activist, who was granted interim bail for six months on medical grounds by the Bombay High Court on February 22, was discharged from the private hospital late Saturday night, they said.

Rao, arrested in 2018, was admitted to the medical facility in November last year due to ill-health.

India: Sharjeel moves HC, seeks quashing of FIR against him over speech

Mumbai, Mar 5 (PTI) Activist Sharjeel Usmani has approached the Bombay High Court seeking to quash an FIR registered against him by the Pune police for allegedly promoting enmity among different groups in his speech made at the Elgar Parishad event held in January this year.

In the petition filed earlier this week, Usmani termed the FIR as "frivolous and baseless", and said it has been registered "on the basis of certain select statements taken out of context".

India: Pune-based Hindutva leader booked for 'promoting enmity'

Pune, Mar 6 (PTI) A case has been registered against Hindutva leader Milind Ekbote, prime accused in the Bhima- Koregaon violence case, for allegedly promoting enmity between groups through his remarks made recently, a Pune police official said on Saturday.

Satish Kale, a leader of Maratha Seva Sangh, Sambhaji Brigade, lodged a complaint against him at Kondhwa police station in Pune city.

India: BJP corporator arrested in molestation case

Mumbai, Mar 4 (PTI) A BJP corporator from Murbad in Thane district has been arrested for allegedly molesting a woman corporator, Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh said on Thursday.

The minister was speaking in the Legislative Council.

"Corporator Nitin Telavane from Murbad tried to molest a woman corporator after barging into her house around 12.40 am (last night)," the minister said.
