India: Delhi's Lady Sri Ram College to reduce fee after student commits suicide

New Delhi, Nov 21 (PTI) Following the suicide of a student allegedly over financial constraints, the Lady Sri Ram College has announced reduction in fee for a few courses, setting up a committee to provide laptops and allowed some second-year students to reside in hostels.

"Given the fact that students are not able to avail certain facilities of the college due to being off-campus, the college has removed such charges from the fees this year. This has led to a substantial reduction in the fee. In addition, it is possible to pay the fee in installments.

India: Sonia Gandhi goes to Goa on medical advice

New Delhi, Nov 20 (PTI) Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Friday flew to Goa for a few days after doctors advised her to get away from the heavy pollution in the national capital in view of her chronic chest infection, party insiders said.

Accompanied by her son Rahul Gandhi, the Congress chief, who left the city this afternoon, will be in Goa till the air quality improves, they said.

Hong Kong bans Air India flights for 5th time over COVID cases

New Delhi, Nov 20 (PTI) Hong Kong has banned Air India flights from Delhi till December 3 after a few passengers on its flight tested positive for the novel coronavirus post-arrival earlier this week, an official said on Friday.

This is the fifth time Air India's flights from India have been banned by the Hong Kong government for bringing passengers who tested positive for the pathogen after arrival.

India: Petrol, diesel price hiked for second day in a row

New Delhi, Nov 21 (PTI) Petrol price on Saturday was hiked by 15 paise per litre and diesel by 20 paise, the second straight day of increase in rates after firming international oil rates broke nearly a two-month-long hiatus in price revision.

The price of petrol in Delhi was hiked to Rs 81.38 per litre from Rs 81.23, according to a notification from oil marketing companies.

Diesel rates went up from Rs 70.68 to Rs 70.88 per litre.

On Friday, petrol price was raised by 17 paise per litre and diesel by 22 paise.

India: COVID-19: Containment zones rise to over 4,550 in Delhi

New Delhi, Nov 20 (PTI) Amid a surge in COVID-19 cases, the number of containment zones has gone up to over 4,550 in the national capital, with the maximum 743 in southwest district and the lowest 148 in northeast district.

According to official data, six districts out of the total 11 have more than 400 COVID-19 containment zones - 743 (southwest), 705 (south), 587 (west), 543 (southeast), 490 (central Delhi) and 445 (northwest).

India: COVID-19 caseload in India breaches 9 million mark

New Delhi, Nov 20 (PTI) India's COVID-19 caseload surpassed the 90-lakh mark on Friday with 45,882 new cases, while the recoveries surged to 84.28 lakh pushing the national recovery rate to 93.6 per cent, according to the Union Health Ministry data

The total coronavirus cases mounted to 90,04,365 and the death toll climbed to 1,32,162 with the novel coronavirus virus claiming 584 lives in a span of 24 hours in the country, the data updated at 8 am showed

New Delhi, Nov 18 (PTI) The AAP and the BJP were engaged in a war of words on Wednesday on the issue of Chhath Puja, with the saffron party's Manoj Tiwari calling Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal "namakharam" for banning the rituals at public places.

India: SC allows UP govt to fill up 69,000 posts for teachers as per results declared in May

New Delhi, Nov 18 ( PTI) The Supreme Court on Wednesday allowed the Uttar Pradesh government to fill up vacancies of 69,000 assistant basic teachers in the state as per results declared by it in May.

A bench headed by Justice U U Lalit dismissed a batch of petitions including the one filed by the "Uttar Pradesh Prathmik Shiksha Mitra Association' challenging the Allahabad High Court's decision to uphold the cut off marks for selection of assistant basic teachers in the states.

India, Kazakhstan review cooperation in key areas

New Delhi, Nov 17 (PTI) India and Kazakhstan on Tuesday carried out a comprehensive review of their cooperation in key areas of trade, energy, defence and space.

The two sides reviewed the entire spectrum of their ties at a virtual meeting under the framework of the foreign office consultations.

"The talks were held in a friendly and cordial atmosphere," the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said.

Indian students contributed USD 7.6 bn to US economy last year

Washington, Nov 17 (PTI) Indian students contributed USD 7.6 billion to the US economy in the academic year 2019-20, even though there was a 4.4 per cent drop in the total number of Indian students, according to a report.

China remained the largest source of international students in the US, with the number of Chinese students in the country increasing for the 16th consecutive year. There were over 372,000 Chinese students in the US during 2019-20 year, said the report "Opens Doors 2020."
