India: Guj court asks Rahul Gandhi to appear on Oct 29 in defamation case

Surat, Oct 26 (PTI) A magistrate court in Surat has directed Congress leader Rahul Gandhi to appear before it on October 29 to record his statement in connection with a criminal defamation case against him over his remark on the "Modi surname".

On Monday, Chief Judicial Magistrate A N Dave asked Gandhi to appear on October 29 to record his statement further, after the testimony of two new witnesses were taken since the Congress leader last appeared before the court on June 24 this year.

India: Gujarat civic polls: BJP takes lead in initial counting

Ahmedabad, Oct 5 (PTI) The BJP took a lead on Tuesday in the initial hours of counting of votes for elections to the Gandhinagar Municipal Corporation (GMC) and three other municipalities in Gujarat.

In the Gandhinagar civic body, the ruling BJP has so far won 16 out of total 44 seats of 11 wards, election officials said, adding that the Congress registered victory in one seat while AAP is yet to open its account.

India: IT dept detects Rs 500-cr unaccounted transactions after raids on Gujarat real estate group

New Delhi, Oct 2 (PTI) The Income Tax Department has detected unaccounted transactions of over Rs 500 crore after it raided an Ahmedabad-based real estate developer and linked brokers as part of a tax evasion probe, the CBDT claimed on Saturday.

"Documents reveal unaccounted income of more than Rs 200 crore in the hands of the real estate group and also unaccounted income of more than Rs 200 crore in the hands of the parties recorded in the documents found from the possession of the brokers.

India: Bhupendra Patel to take oath as new Gujarat CM

Gandhinagar, Sep 12 (PTI) Bhupendra Patel will take oath as the Chief Minister of Gujarat on Monday, state BJP president C R Paatil said.

Talking to reporters on Sunday, Paatil said, "Bhupendra Patel will take oath as the chief minister...Only the chief minister will be sworn in tomorrow."

He added the new cabinet will be formed after consultation with the senior leaders in a couple of days.

No discussion was held in the legislature party meeting about the deputy chief minister's post, he said.

Ahmedabad, Sep 11 (PTI) Opposition Congress and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Saturday claimed that Vijay Rupani, who resigned as Gujarat chief minister earlier in the day, paid the price for the BJP's failures.

The saffron party can not cover up the failure of its "remote-controlled" government by simply changing the chief minister, the Congress said.

India: 6 arrested for rape, murder of woman in Guj

Vadodara, Aug 18 (PTI) Six men employed as labourers for a rail project were arrested for allegedly raping and killing a woman in a village in Gujarat's Vadodara district, police said on Wednesday.

The men, staying in a colony of labourers, allegedly raped the woman (37) in a farmland where she had gone to cut grass for fodder two days ago, strangled her to death and then dumped the body in the same field and fled, Vadodara (rural) Superintendent of Police Sudhir Desai said.

India: Adulterated mustard oil causes three deaths in Guj

Palanpur, Aug 5 (PTI) Three members of a family in Gujarat's Banaskantha district died in the span of two weeks due to `epidemic dropsy', a rare disease caused by the consumption of adulterated mustard oil, an official said on Thursday.

Seven members of Paliwal family in Kundi village fell sick after eating a dish cooked in locally milled mustard oil, said Epidemic Officer N K Garg.

While four of them recovered following treatment, Chhaganbhai Paliwal (52), his son Navin (24) and daughter Daksha (18) died between July 22 and August 5, he said.

India: Bail for tribal activist accused of sedition in Guj

Ahmedabad, Aug 3 (PTI) The Gujarat High Court on Tuesday granted bail to a Pathalgadi movement activist from Jharkhand, arrested in Gujarat on the charges of sedition and `waging war against the government'.

Babita Kashyap had been arrested by the state Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) last year for allegedly inciting tribals against the Gujarat government.

Justice S H Vora granted her bail on a personal bond of Rs 20,000. She shall not leave India without the session court's permission, the order said.
