India: Seven-year-old girl raped in Rajasthan's Alwar

Jaipur, Jun 6 (PTI) A 30-year-old man was arrested for allegedly raping a minor in Rajasthan's Alwar district, police said on Saturday.

The accused, identified as Niranjan Kumar, abducted the seven-year-old girl from her house on Wednesday night while she was sleeping in the verandah, they said.

He took her to a secluded place and raped her, according to a complaint lodged by the girl's family.

India: Two judges test positive for COVID-19

Kolkata, Jun 6 (PTI) In the first such instance in West Bengal two judges of a city court have tested positive for COVID-19 following which people who had come in contact with them have been advised to proceed on home quarantine, state helth department sources said Saturday.

The two affected are judges of the district civil and sessions court in Alipore aand are being treated at private medical establishments here, an official of the health department said.

India overtakes Italy's coronavirus tally as lockdown easing looms

MUMBAI (Reuters) - India reported a record 9,887 new coronavirus cases in one day on Saturday and overtook Italy as the world’s sixth-biggest outbreak, two days before the relaxing of a lockdown with the reopening of malls, restaurants and places of worship.

With its total number of cases rising to more than 236,000, India now has fewer infections than only the United States, Brazil, Russia, Britain and Spain, according to a Reuters tally.

Reliance Industries shares hit 52-wk high after Abu Dhabi's Mubadala deal

New Delhi, Jun 5 (PTI) Shares of Reliance Industries on Friday gained over 2 per cent to hit their one-year high level after the company announced sale of 1.85 per cent stake in its digital unit, Jio Platforms, to Abu Dhabi-based sovereign investor Mubadala.

On BSE, the heavyweight stock jumped 2.38 per cent to Rs 1,617.70 -- its 52-week high.

It surged 2.41 per cent to its one-year high of Rs 1,618 on NSE.

India: BJP MP fined for violating Covid rules

Bhubaneswar, Jun 4 (PTI) Odisha police fined BJP leader and Bhubaneswar MP Aparajita Sarangi on Thursday for attending a gathering without a face mask and violating social distancing norms laid down by the government to contain the spread of the coronavirus.

Images showing her surrounded by supporters at a party worker's residence in violation of the government norms were widely shared on social media.

The parliamentarian said she acknowledged her duty, respected the sentiments and concerns of people and volunteered to pay the fine according to the rules.

India: Around 31 lakh migrant workers returned to UP

Lucknow, June 4 (PTI) Around 31lakh migrant workers have returned to Uttar Pradesh through trains and other means with state road transport corporation buses alone ferrying over 2.30 lakh people in last three days, an official said on Thursday.

Additional Chief Secretary Awanish Awsathi said about 31 lakh people have come to the state by trains and other means.

India: BJP indulging in horse trading in Guj: Gehlot

Jaipur, Jun 4 (PTI) Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot on Thursday accused the BJP of indulging in horse trading in Gujarat ahead of the Rajya Sabha elections.

"The BJP is again using its time-tested tactic, which is horse trading, in Gujarat ahead of the Rajya Sabha elections," Gehlot tweeted.

He said the party can go to any extent for winning seats.

"Luring opposition MLAs is the party's only game plan in order to grab seats or power by hook or by crook," he said, in reaction to resignation of two Gujarat Congress MLAs.

India: Ex Amnesty Int'l official booked for "offensive" remarks

Bengaluru, Jun 5 (PTI) A case has been registered against former Executive Director of human rights advocacy group Amnesty International Aakar Patel for posting an "offensive" content on social media, which allegedly sought to instigate a section of people against the government.

The case was registered on Tuesday following a complaint by the police inspector of JC Nagar police station alleging that the twitter post by Patel was "offensive."
