India: Man awarded life term for raping woman in UP

Pratapgarh (UP), Dec 8 (PTI) A court here has awarded life imprisonment to a man for raping a woman in the Kandhai area of this Uttar Pradesh district.

Special Judge (Schedule Caste/Schedule Tribe) Monika Thakur also imposed a fine of Rs 20,000 on convict Rajkumar Verma.

Verma had raped the woman in August 2016 when she was alone in her house and had also threatened her for dire consequences if she revealed the matter to someone else.

An FIR was registered in the matter after a complaint by the victim's family.

India: Tejashwi Yadav to get married

Patna, Dec 8 (PTI) Leaders and workers of the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) in Bihar had a big reason to celebrate on Wednesday when news came in that Tejashwi Yadav, younger son and heir apparent of party supremo Lalu Prasad, is going to get married.

Yadav, who at 32 years is arguably the most eligible bachelor in the state's political circles, is scheduled to get engaged in Delhi on Thursday.

India: Raut meets Priyanka, day after holding talks with Rahul

New Delhi, Dec 8 (PTI) Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut had an hour-long meeting with Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Wednesday to explore the option of an electoral alliance in poll-bound Uttar Pradesh and Goa.

The meeting comes a day after Raut's talks with former Congress president Rahul Gandhi.

The Shiv Sena leader told reporters that Priyanka Gandhi discussed the political situation in Uttar Pradesh and other poll-bound states with him.

India: Swaying on bike without a helmet results in paying fine

Kanpur: What was expected by a young man turned out to be his headache after receiving the challan from traffic police here.

 A youngster in Kanpur was issued a challan by the traffic police just after a video showing him grooving to a Bollywood song number on a motorcycle without wearing a helmet.  

The youth's motive behind the dramatic act was to get more 'likes' and 'followers' on social media.

The youth in question has been identified as Khalid Ahmed, a resident of Maswanpur locality of Kanpur's Kalyanpur area.

India: Chief of Defence Staff Gen Bipin Rawat, wife and 11 others killed in helicopter crash

New Delhi, Dec 8 (PTI) Gen Bipin Rawat, India's first Chief of Defence Staff, his wife and 11 other armed forces personnel died on Wednesday after the military helicopter they were travelling in crashed near Coonoor in Tamil Nadu, the Indian Air Force said.

The lone survivor, Group Captain Varun Singh, is currently under treatment at a military hospital in Wellington, it said.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said he was "deeply anguished" by the sudden demise of Gen Bipin Rawat, his wife and 11 others in an "extremely unfortunate helicopter" accident.

India: Several turn up to take first dose of vaccination at Jajmau camp

Kanpur: Those, who had not got the extended opportunity to get vaccinated even the first important dose, reached the not so crowded vaccination camp held at Jajmau here on Thursday. 

Even the health workers did not realise the noisy scene at the spot. They were engaged in filling the details online and injecting the dose to the person after filling up the form. It was later handed over to the person who was benefitted from the first dose.

They were undoubtedly kind to the persons arriving at their desk. If anyone was feeling a kind of anxiety they asked them to relax.

Pak-China bilateral trade, Pakistan’s exports to China setting records this year: Wang Wenbin

ISLAMABAD, Dec 8 (APP): Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson, Wang Wenbin said on Wednesday that Pakistan-China bilateral trade and Pakistan’s exports to China were both running at record levels for the year to date.

The economic and trade cooperation between China and Pakistan are mutually beneficial and has delivered tangible benefits to two peoples, he made these comments during his regular briefing in response to a question asked by APP.

India's chief of defense staff, 12 others killed in helicopter crash

NEW DELHI, Dec. 8 (Xinhua) -- India's Chief of Defense Staff (CDS) General Bipin Rawat and 12 others including his wife were killed and one was injured on Wednesday in a helicopter crash in the southern state of Tamil Nadu, officials said.

"Deeply anguished by the sudden demise of Chief of Defence Staff Gen Bipin Rawat, his wife and 11 other armed forces personnel in an extremely unfortunate helicopter accident today in Tamil Nadu. His untimely death is an irreparable loss to our armed forces and the country," India's Defense Minister Rajnath Singh wrote on social media.

India’s military chief, 12 others killed in helicopter crash

NEW DELHI (AP) — India’s military chief, Gen. Bipin Rawat, and 12 others were killed Wednesday in a helicopter crash in southern Tamil Nadu state, the air force said.

It said in a tweet that the helicopter “met with a tragic accident.”

The dead included Rawat’s wife. The air force said one officer, Group Capt. Varun Singh, survived and is being treated in a military hospital.
